We went to Holding Mercury's show in Indy last Friday night, and enjoyed it a lot. Got to meet all the guys, and they are all very cool and nice. I bought their CD and am really enjoying it, too. Some of the songs are stuck in my head now. Photos will be forthcoming. If I don't get them done before this weekend, probably won't have them ready until sometime after election day. I'm going to be doing a lot of volunteering.

We decided at the last minute to go to this show. Since it was all ages we thought this was the perfect opportunity for our daughter to see the show. She's almost 15 and just crazy for Matt. She had seen him perform with Lovehammers but had never seen Holding Mercury. What better place than a youth club for her to see them. The best part is we didn't tell her she was going. On Thursday, we told her that we had a surprise for her on Saturday but she needed to work on controlling the teenage angst. It drove her crazy all weekend, and she kept asking for hints as to what we were doing. It was homecoming weekend here at Mizzou and we had some plans to go to the Campus Decs and Parade besides going to Indy. So we just thru random stuff out there - One hint was it's homecoming (it was at IU, too); one was to make sure she knew what she was doing with her hair (she just got it cut); one was we're having pizza (we ate before the show). We just kept her on her toes. So, she ends up thinking we are going to the Mizzou game. Then she thinks we are going to see Marty. Then she asks if Heidi is coming for a visit. Then we tell her we are going to Indiana. She's totally confused. Then she thinks we are going to a corn maze and haunted houses. Can't figure out why we would drive all the way to Indy for that but at least she's still off track.
We get to the hotel and I tell her about a waterfall in the area and she moans and says that's what we're here for? I tell her no, we're here for the pizza. She is so confused. And it turns out we are too. There is a time change we forgot about. It's actually 5:15 pm and the show supposedly starts at 6 pm according to the info online. Our hotel is 50 miles away from the venue. Gotta get a move on!
We get back in the car take the back country roads and she is really thinking now about pizza and waterfalls. Ha! We've got her. We pull up in front of Rhino's and she asks what kind of pizza place is this. The doors are locked and she is looking in the windows. There are only couches. Finally, after about 10 minutes, she looks up at the sign. The band is listed on the marquee. She is so excited! Screaming, "we are seeing Holding Mercury?" I knew it! (She only guessed that once though and was leaning more toward the corn maze. lol) Then the frustration sets in. If we would have told her, she would have worn a different outfit and her converse. Teens. She was really happy that I told her to figure out her hair though and laughed about that.
So, the doors are locked. It's 6:10. I'm parked right next to the good times van, but not a soul is around. Weird. We walk up the block so hubby can have a smoke. No smoking in front of the kids' club. Finally we see someone unlock the door and go in. We go back, and the guy works there. He said the doors open at 8 pm, and the bands go on at 8:30. He said that the bands are supposed to be there at 6:30 and that Matt probably gave me the time that they were supposed to be here. No biggie. We haven't eaten. He recommends a pizza place and we head off to dinner.
Dinner was alright. He sent us to a Greek pizzaria. The pizza was greasy and the service was slow, but we had a good time razzing Ashley. She was still in disbelief that she was finally going to see the whole band. On the walk back to the venue, she was our radio and sang Lovehammer and Holding Mercury songs to us.

When we get back, there are about 15 kids standing out front, some with skateboards. Then Jason comes out. We say hello to him and introduce Ash. He's really cool with her. She tells him that she plays the drums and she asks him for help finding a band. He says he'll see what he can find. He talks to some of the other kids and asks them if they are coming to the show. They are. Then he tells us that he can't find his band. The van is gone.
Eventually the guys make it back. Ash sees the van pull up and screams, "There's Matt!" She takes off down the sidewalk. Then, suddenly she's turning around. She can't do it; she's nervous; can I come with her? I tell her to give them a moment, she'll get a chance to talk to them later. REALLY? She can't believe that she'll get to talk to him. Well, after a few minutes, they come around to the front so they can go in for soundcheck. Matt realizes we are there, and is surprised we came up for the show. I re-introduce him to our daughter and he remembers meeting her at Market Days. He says her name and the show without any prompting. That's when Ashley orbited the moon. You could just see it come over her face. He went in for sound check and she gushed a little while. Andy came up real quick, too, and we did the introductions. She thought he was really cool. Told us she wanted to dress more like him. (vintage) Then they opened the doors and we went in.
Once inside we took a seat on one of the couches. The guys ran thru sound check. Turns out that wasn't the actual guy that was going to do the sound, but they got a little check in. Ashok came over and said hi when they were done. Told us a little about the show the night before. Off and on different band members came up and we talked about the tour. Ashley loved it!
The first band Metricelectric (I think) started their soundcheck, and it ran right into their set. I honestly thought they were still soundchecking all thru their first song. The band consisted of two guys and a computer. They played electronica on the computer and sang along with it. The one guy had a great voice. They still seemed pretty young, but they had a great local following. After the show, Ash asked if they had a CD, but they didn't yet. Told her to keep in touch on myspace. Unfortunately, when they left, they took all of the crowd with them.
HM was up next. They sound checked again with the right sound guy. That was hilarious. Jason and Ashok were in rare form. Lots of McCain impersonations. I had thought HM was the headliner, but we didn't see Surrender Dorothy anywhere so we thought that was why they were up next. I went outside to make a call before the set, and found Surrender Dorothy and a bunch of people from Chicago. Never did see those kids again. Turns out the SD guys went to school at IU so HM let them be the headliners. Cool!
Once the set started, Ashley didn't want to go up front. We finally got her up there when I told her that I would be moving around taking pictures. Once she stood up, she just watched in amazement, singing along to every song. It was like she still couldn't believe it was real.

I had hubby write down the set list. Here's what he has: Let It Go Love In the Information Age I'm Not Well Cancerous No One Around Unrequited Love Stuck in a Box One of the guys told us they were going to play 8 songs. Not sure if hubby missed one. They may have also played Standing Eight Count. I got a cellcert from the show the night before and may be remembering that song from that.
Personally, I was elated that I finally got to hear No One Around. I say finally, but it's only the second time they've played it. lol I just have thought that would be a fun crowd song since I heard it on the CD. Ashley was thrilled to hear Stuck in a Box. She thanked Jason for playing it last, and told her they did it just for her.
Oh, I forgot to mention that Ash scoped out the merch earlier. The band has some cool new sweat/wristbands with the mad hatter on them. So, she was counting out how much money she has when Matt walks up. She gets flustered. Too cute! I tell hubby just to give her some money, and Matt offers to take her over and get her set up. She picks out a white mad hatter tee and the wristband. All the guys sign the shirt for her. She can't wait to show it off at school.
Matt and I try to have a conversation while the next band is sound checking. It's impossible to hear one another. He does tell me that Ashley is cute. Right as the band stops playing, she asks me really loud what Matt said. I told her to ask him. He tells her she is cute, and that was it. She's beyond the stars. She tells him back that she thinks he is, too.
Surrender Dorothy played their set. They're good. They made an announcement about going out to party. Of course, Ashley begs to go. Right! We chat with the HM guys a little more. They mention that they are probably just going to find a place to crash and that makes her happy knowing they aren't partying without her. We all chat some more. Ash asks the guys MORE questions. By this time, she has lost her inhibition and is pretty comfortable with them. They talk clothes, hair, etc. I'm thankful that they were so nice to her.
The whole way back to the hotel she relives the experience. She can't believe Matt remembered her. She can't believe he called her cute. She tells us she is "over the moon and beyond the stars". I just love it!
