southsideonthetown.blogspot.com/Southside from Fearless radio blog about the 1/24/09 Reggie show Excitement was in the air when this band closed out the fantastic lineup at Reggie’s. Holding Mercury celebrated the release of their latest EP, Downfall of an Empire, by rockin’ out the crowd. After opening with Let It Go, SouthSide noticed something quite different about the band since the last time she saw them. Comparing them from 2008 to now, there was definitely more energy and vibrant feel in their music. Each song performed made you want to dance to the beat. For example, their most rockin’ song, Cancerous, truly had this audience grooving to the thrilling music. SouthSide enjoyed the wild guitar riffs and rhythms that pumped the venue with lots of sound. The drum solo during Standing Eight had them cheering and wanting more of Holding Mercury. Even the encore performed wasn’t enough to satisfy this audience. They still wanted more. Overall, this band performed a headlining set their fans will never forget. This reviewer recommends Fearless fans checking out this band as well as picking up their EP, Downfall of an Empire. For more information about this band and where they’re performing next, visit them at www.holdingmercury.com or www.myspace.com/holdingmercury.

I listened to the tracks on HM's myspace for the first time today. I wasn't really expecting much because I was never overly impressed by Matt on RS. Boy was I wrong....these guys are great! The most insta-impressed I've been by a band in a while. Their album jumped right up to the top of the (pretty long) "to buy" list. Ones to watch for sure.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www.playbackstl.com/content/view/8524/39/Holding Out for Holding Mercury Written by Laura Hamlett Wednesday, 18 February 2009 Their self-released CD Downfall of an Empire is one of those rare gems: catchy at the start, and the more you listen to it, the more you love it. Obviously, I don't blog very much. I don't Facebook. I don't Twitter. I don't much care what you are doing at this very moment, and I don't expect you to care about me. I mean, for reals...if I gave even half a nuts, I would call you and ask, right? I'm not calling. Phone's not ringing. Still, sometimes I have a moment or two free, and in this moment, I want to mention something. It's not so much what I'm doing but what I think you might like. I'm liistening to a Chicago band called Holding Mercury. Their self-released CD Downfall of an Empire is one of those rare gems: catchy at the start, and the more you listen to it, the more you love it. You may or may not know I work at Cicero's now. Yeah, I do the booking. It's kind of a dream job, except for those times when I really, really, really don't like musicians. Ah well, price you must pay and all that. Anyway, in my infinite wisdom, I have booked Holding Mercury to play my club next weekend. This will be the third (or fourth?) time they've been here since I took over; each time, their crowd grows, and each time, I love their music even more. Get the album and listen. Or better yet, get the album, learn and the songs, then come out and sing them with me February 27. I promise it will be a night well worth your $6. | Laura Hamlett

Check out this fantastic article: lagniappemobile.com/articles/55-chicago-band-stretches-its-legs-down-southChicago Band Stretches Its Legs Down South By Steve Centanni Issue #172 February 24, 2009 Some things are just meant to be, and Chicago’s Holding Mercury is a prime example of this. What was once an on-again/off-again music project has finally developed permanence, and this band’s momentum seems to be growing day by day. As far as gigs are concerned, Holding Mercury has been sticking to the Midwest. However, their rotation on 92 Zew has attracted a few ears in the Port City, so it is only natural that they travel to Mobile to give their new fans a live taste of their sound. The roots of this band lie with lead singer/guitarist Matt Hoffer and bassist Andrew Titchenal, who began playing together in their youth while playing hockey. When they would have away games, Hoffer and Titchenal would bring their guitars and jam on the way to the game.“We were learning speed metal things together, which is a much different sound that we have,” Hoffer says. Their incarnation came in 2001, and in 2002, they brought out their first release in the form of a self-titled EP. For this one, they retreated to the confines of legendary industry icon Steve Albini’s (Nirvana/Pixies) Electrical Audio Studios in their hometown. However, this version of the band lacked coagulation, and they soon parted ways for the time being. Hoffer moved away and tried his hand at a solo career, which led to the release of “Never Comfortable” in 2005. Sometime later, Hoffer decided to try his hand at reality television and beat out 5,000 contestants to compete on “Rock Star Supernova.” The grand prize was a chance to act as vocalist for a band that included Jason Newsted (Metallica), Gilby Clarke (Guns N’ Roses) and Tommy Lee (Motley Crue). Even though Hoffer was eliminated early in the series, the experience gave him a renewed confidence of sorts. “I think that if anything, it was validation that I was good enough to perform on the international stage,” Hoffer said. “I beat out 5,000 to get on the show. I don’t think that I was well-suited with that band, and with the way things went afterward, it kinda worked out the way it was supposed to.” As far as Holding Mercury is concerned, appearing on the show has had its positives and negatives. “Some people may look at the show, especially the indie/hipster crowd that wants everything underground, they might discredit me before they listen,” says Hoffer. However, this has attracted new listeners to Holding Mercury due to his reputation for being on the show. After his appearance on “Rock Star Supernova,” Hoffer felt it was time to give Holding Mercury another chance and reunited with Titchenal. The next couple years were spent preparing a full-length release and creating a dedicated core for Holding Mercury. With their full-length, Holding Mercury chose a popular path with modern up and coming bands and tapped drummer Garrett Hammond (Kill Hannah) to produce the project. Hammond had previously played with Holding Mercury, but when faced with making the decision between family and music, family prevailed. “He happens to be an amazing studio drummer and producer,” Hoffer explains. “I have a home studio here in my place in Chicago, and he would come down after he recorded his drum parts at his house.” They spent 16 months working out every aspect of this album including scrapping songs and rewriting others. The album was finally mastered in late ‘06/early ‘07. During this time, they also completed their goal of establishing a core group with Hoffer on guitar/lead vocals, Titchenal on bass, Ashok Warrier on guitar and Jason Batchko on drums. With everything in place, it was time for them to release their first full-length album “Downfall of an Empire.” Its release along with their electrifying live shows brought them back to their hometown of Chicago (home of a very rich alternative and underground scene) and around the Midwest. “Ever since Q101, which is a big alternative station, got their hands on us, they’ve been playing our music pretty regularly on their local shows, even primetime,” says Hoffer. “We’re drawing triple figures at our shows in Chicago. I think that combined with the fact that we’re going out of state and trying to do things regionally instead of just playing in town every three or four weeks is paying off.” Even though they have made it into the public eye in Chicago, Holding Mercury faced obstacles in the local indie scene, which concentrates more on eclectic acts. Because of this, they have received very little publicity in the form of press, so their popularity has come more from their sound, word of mouth and live shows, which Hoffer claims is one of their secret weapons. “We’re not gonna have laser lights and strobes and gimmicky like video cameras,” Hoffer says. “It’s just a rock show where we want everybody to have fun. We want everybody to get involved and sing along and stuff.” According to their Web site, Holding Mercury is planning to make 2009 an explosive year. Recently, they caught the ear of someone very big in the music industry, and they are hoping that their music will be heard all over the country very soon. “We have a very prominent person who is the radio promoter who broke Fall Out Boy and The Killers when she was at Island,” says Hoffer. “Now, she’s independent, and I think she’s working Scott Weiland’s and Pearl Jam’s records to radio stations. She loves the record, and she’s starting to shop it.” Until then, Holding Mercury will be playing more shows around the Midwest and Mobile. If all goes as planned, the rest of the world might be hearing from Holding Mercury very soon. Until then, they plan on rocking Mobile with a little help from Port Wine Stain, which is one of the newest, most unique acts to converge on the local music scene.
