Remember in the last songwriting clinic, where they met with Andrew Fariss? Marty said something about having to be an overqualified songwriter.
It hit me later that "Overqualified" is probably the single word that describes why Marty didn't get the gig. They could see it, and knew that he was meant for bigger things. I think that's also why they assigned him the song "Don't Change" twice.
I also began to wonder something else, though, after what Marty's big bro John said about Mark Burnett having big plans for Marty. I wonder if Mark Burnett saw Marty's huge appeal and multifaceted talents, and told INXS that they could have anyone on there EXCEPT Marty. Perhaps they had to sort of 'sell their souls' to MB to get to do this show. By that I mean that if MB found someone like Marty, then MB would get him, not INXS.

No question Marty was way overqualified for INXS.
I did read John's comment, and Mark wouldn't be a savyy business person not to see major dollar signs in Marty. Can't wait to hear the great news regarding his future plans...

I'm thinking "overqualified" is an understatement! Marty is unique, and on a whole different level! He deserves to be in charge of his music and not have to water it down for anyone else. I am, however, grateful to INXS for introducing him to us. I think they helped him in some ways and he helped them in the ratings, and if he opens for them, will no doubt sell a lot of tickets! I will buy a ticket only if Marty is opening.

I totally agree with Marty being overqualified. I have been saying that for weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!The guy that did win is more easily "molded" where as Marty has so much more knowledge and ideas, etc... We love him(I and my daughters-ages 15 and 9)!!!!!!!!!!TREES is our favorite song. Can't wait to hear it on the radio. Rock on, Marty!!!!!!!!!!You have tons of fans. Morris, IL hope to see you on the tv and radio!!

Yes Marty is definatley overqualified for INXS. I think even they, saw that. I also think deep down, they figured Marty would end up being bigger than them...as a band. They were over shadowed by Michael Hutchence..and maybe just didn't want that happen again. Seems by doing this reality show, they wanted to end up being just as important as the front man. Marty has already become a superstar..and that leaves them in the dust. It would have been all about Marty..and nothing about the rest of them. JMO

I just hope that whatever Marty does that he stays true to himself under the pressure of what "Mark" or anyone else would want for him. The money is great but happiness is priceless. From what I have seen on the show Marty appears to be very smart business-wise and I hope Burnett does not try and take advantage of him. (He'll have to get by us first!!)

I missed what Marty's brother said about MB plans for Marty - where can I find that, anyone know?

I totally saw significance in the fact that Marty was asked to sing "Don't Change". He is beyond awesome in what he does. He is destined for much bigger things than a one year tour and a CD with INXS. I believe that INXS saw that and it was their gift to him to allow him to go on and be awesome on his own, without INXS.

I'm certain that right now Marty's head is spinning like JD was on asscake. Yes, he's business savvy, but the music industry can eat him alive if he doesn't have solid attorneys, agents, and managers. I hope he's signing with people who have his best interest at heart and not MBP's. Marty has a LOT to think about right now - I can't even begin to imagine the offers he has to ponder, with and without LH. I know he has to do what's right by HIM. That may or may not be with LH and we have to accept whatever his decision is and support him. We don't know if LH is ready to accept the "new" Marty. I'd love to believe they're eager to embrace his changes and new-found voice - literally and figuratively. He's grown more than they know and more than he ever anticipated. He gets it that "less is more" with his new vocal range....and he gets it that he can actually (ding!) pull it off flawlessly. If Marty decides to tour with INXS, I like to think of it as INXS closing for Marty. Across the country he'll see legions of fans with Kool-Aid packets firmly pinned to their shirts!

EXACTLY. I could have written that word for word, Amy.

That's actually how I am looking at it--we will just get to see the best go first. Like some people are saying, INXS is closing Marty's performance! And after this, the sky is the limit! I will buy a ticket only if Marty is opening. I will buy a ticket only if INXS is opening for Marty's Band. ;D ;D

You are spot-on BBE. Marty is so much more than INXS. I am looking foward to seeing him open for INXS when they come downunder. It will mean an international trip for me but I will go to where he is and worship with the other Peachlovers.
And Amy
As for the Lovehammers and their readiness to take him back, time will tell, but if they don't it will be because it is time to move on for all of them. I hope they do though because I have only just discovered The Lovehammers and I would love to hear more from them with Marty on vocals.

Hi - first post ever here.
Marty is absolutely overqualified for INXS Part Deux. I came into the show late... but knew immediately that he had what it takes to make without INXS. It happened exactly the way I wanted it to. He came in *second*. He got a ton of exposure and isn't nailed down to Part Deux. It reminded me of the brady bunch episode where Greg got the gig as Johnny Bravo because he fit the suit. Fortune may *fit the suit* but Marty will soar on his own.

MARTY IS THE WHOLE PACKAGE and INXS knew that. Overqualified is an understatement. He's a one man show. Give him a stage and a guitar and everyone would be captivated.

I was totally destroyed when Marty didn't win, but I've been listening to the Lovehammers almost non-stop, and I am SO overjoyed that Marty is going to be able to continue making this frigging awesome music!! Wow, this man rocks! No way should his talent, energy & original vision be stifled by anybody.
So now I don't mind that he's not going to be with INXS. However, it still makes me bitter that he had to stand there at the end of the competition and be deemed "second best" to JD. That's just wrong...
