A Chicago man known to fans of Mancow Muller's popular radio show as "Cowboy Ray" was in critical condition Sunday after being hit by a car while leaving a Garfield Ridge bar he frequented.
Raymond Hofstatter, 45, an occasional contributor to "Mancow's Morning Madhouse" on WKQX (101.1 FM), was crossing a four-lane road in the 5500 block of South Archer Avenue about 3:45 a.m. Sunday when he was hit by a southbound car, police said.
The driver, described by witnesses as a dark-haired woman, did not stop and is being sought, police said.
Hofstatter had just left the Bohica Bar and Grill with some bartenders and bouncers, one of whom was going to drop him off at the West Lawn home he shares with his mother and aunt, said the bar's co-owner, Lori Martinez.
He was crossing Archer to a parking lot, just behind three bar employees, when the car came out of nowhere, said Martinez, who was locking up the bar and heard a loud "thump." Witnesses described the car as a dark-colored Honda Civic.
Hofstatter was being treated Sunday at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
A fixture at Bohica's, Hofstatter likes to sing karaoke — "Viva Las Vegas" is one of his favorites — and chat up other patrons and tell movie trivia.
He goes to the bar nearly every day and sticks around until closing time because one of the bar's employees always gives him a ride home, Martinez said.
He drinks Diet Cokes and the occasional beer on tap but isn't charged for drinks, she said. Sometimes, patrons buy him beers as well.
"He hung around with everybody like they were his best friend," Martinez said.
Hofstatter's aunt Helen Davis described her nephew as mentally "slow." She said he was recently depressed because he doesn't have a job.
Hofstatter got his nickname, Cowboy Ray, as a frequent caller to Muller's radio show who identified himself as a cowboy.
Muller, who described Hofstatter as an "uberfan," was outraged after hearing about the accident Sunday, adding he would "do everything I can do to get to the bottom of this."
"It's a punch in the gut," Muller said. "Chicago loved this guy. And he really loved me and loved the show. He was absolutely one of a kind. This is really awful."
