Hi NOLA Goddess --
I'm so glad you sound like you're doing well. Don't worry: your beloved city will re-build. You just have to believe. I spent a LOT of time in NO over the years (I co-owned a tour co. that did Anne Rice Tours back in the day) and as someone who absolutely LOVED that place and thanked my lucky stars I got to be there so much, I can't imagine the world without it. Good luck to you and yours.

Hi NOLA
New Orleans is one of my fav. cities to visit. A fun time is usually had by all there.
But I feel your hurricane pain. I too live on the Gulf Coast (of Florida) and we are about over all the hurricanes this year. What a rough two years we have had with one storm after another. Of course nothing like what Katrina wrought...but tough enough. I live a very short block from the Gulf, so we usually have to evacuate fairly early when one is headed this way.
Glad you are back home. I can understand your discomfort.

I'm so sorry for all of you that are having to deal with all of the aspects of Katrina, and now Rita. I am a high school teacher and have a student who came to Texas temporarily from New Orleans. He said his school is due to reopen on Oct. 17, and if that happens I would think a lot of people would start coming back. I told him I wanted him to stay long enough to start talking like a Texan. Actually, I will miss him because he is a good guy, but I know it must be hard to be that age and suddenly have to go to a new school where you don't know anyone. A lot of students who were involved in activities and sports in Lousiana have not been able to continue them in the new schools because of UIL rules.
I hope things start looking up for you soon. In the meantime, listen to Marty!

A lot of students who were involved in activities and sports in Lousiana have not been able to continue them in the new schools.... thank the powers that be that this didn't happen my Senior year in High School... I did a lot of stuff with my high school dance team and other dance organizations. I performed in Paris, France, at Superbowl XXX, national dance team competition in Memphis... then after I graduated the company I went on all those trips with hired me as a teacher/choreographer. I WOULD HAVE DIED if this happed to me. I feel so bad about all the students that were hopeing for (or COUNTING on) scholorships to college through sports, etc. teams.
My family and I are most certainly counted amoung the more fortunate... it seems pretty much only my Mother's house was a complete loss (12 inches of water and endless mold) and my uncle's "summer House" in Bay St. Louis... they found a couple of coffee cups and stuff... the ENTIRE house is just GONE... we all spent time there, for holidays and stuff so, it IS a loss... but at least it wasn't my Uncle's Home Home.[/size]

Yes, during the high school years, friends and activities are the most important things to kids. In some cases, they have been able to continue, but if they had worked hard and made cheerleader, they couldn't just walk on as a cheerleader at the new school. A lot of the rules about athletes are designed to keep coaches from "recruiting" players from other schools, so student usually can't immediately start playing football, etc., when they come to a new school. I see the reason for the rules, but wish they could be bent in this situation. I think there have been a few instances of waivers, but many are left out of positive actitivities that could be their ticket to college in the form of scholarships. Very sad, but the students I have met here from NO have been very sweet and don't show any resentment at all. I admire them a lot.

So sorry to hear that you were affected by Katrina. I'm glad you are able to get back and hope that your beautiful city will be up and running again soon. Hang in there!

Hold on, NolaGoddess, nothing lasts forever This tragedy touched us all and we all tried to help - I hope that the rebuilding is taken over by competent people. Close your eyes and MC and LH will awake the part of you that wants to rock, react, not yield to depression. Been in a major disaster in the past. Know how you feel
