I still smoke vicariously through my friends ;D. It was a fun social habit, and a great way to meet people when travelling (got a light?) but it s*cked big time once it became an addiction. From the beginning I always told myself I could be stupid as long as it was only affecting me, but I would never make that decision for anyone else, particularily an innocent child. I must have had that idea deeply rooted in my subconscious because I quit the minute I found out I was pregnant (unplanned but happy event) and did not have even ONE withdrawal symptom. I was too scared to start up again afterwards because I didn't want to have to keep having kids in order to quit . . . . . . Now I can't stand the way it tastes, and hate the way stale smoke smells. However, oddly, the smell of a fresh cigarette can still put me back in a happy place. I'm glad it's out of my life though. I feel great and I can smell things again . . . like spring and the rain . . . it really feels like freedom!

I tried the patch the last time but like I said, there was just tooooo much stress. I already bought it to use again for this next one. Something they never tell you about is that smoking disinigrates the bone structure that hold your teeth in. If someone had told me 20 years ago that I could lose my teeth (I haven't, yet) I might have never started. That's a commercial they need to have on TV!!!!

In Canada, there are mandatory warning labels on all cigarette packages. They take up about 50% of the package. They give information and statistics on the dangers of smoking and feature extremely graphic photos -- rotten teeth, cancerous lungs, etc. Edited to add this link: www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/photogal/label-etiquette/index_e.htmlIf I had seen these images back when I was in high school I probably wouldn't have started smoking.

The weird thing about the teeth thing is that you don't see it coming. I have NO cavities. Stains are easy to get rid of now. But now I have some loosening due to smoking caused dental bone loss. KIDS need to know this. I wish I had. I've spent my life taking care of my teeth fastidiously and now this. The US needs to get some of the info on TV.

But I drink a lot of coffee, combine it with 15 years of smoking and its not a pretty picture (my teeth) If I were you, I would check with your dentist before you use that stuff -- just to make sure it's safe. There are some bleaches out there that are too harsh and could damage your enamel. Once your enamel is gone, the only way your teeth will ever be white is if you get veneers or caps. (Cha-ching!!) Have you ever tried Crest White Strips or Colgate Night Effects? They've both worked well for me. I have a lot of unhealthy habits (all of which I am trying to quit) -- I smoke a lot and practically live on coffee and Diet Coke, but my teeth are really white. The Colgate stuff actually works even better for me than the Crest White Strips (and it's cheaper). The strips work best on people with really straight, even teeth. (My parents couldn't afford to get braces for me when I was a kid so I sort of have Patricia Arquette teeth. Rather than thinking of them as crooked, I choose to think of them as giving my face some character.) Anyway, since you paint the Colgate stuff onto your teeth it does a great job of whitening the whole tooth, not just the front. It only takes about a week before you start seeing results. You can get a white chart from your dentist to track your progress (so you know for sure that your teeth are actually getting whiter). The last time I went to my dentist, my teeth were one step from the brightest white on the chart. I was pretty damn excited about that.

The best thing is to talk to your dentist. The White Strips are great but they do diminish your enamel. Something to think about. All I can add is Floss, Floss, Floss. I can't believe smoking did this to my teeth, gums and the bones that hold them in. I am terrified of losing them, especially after taking such good care of them. I am looking at perfectly good teeth falling out because of smoking. I still wish I had that warning. Even now, they don't warn of that which really p!$$es me off.

The last time I went to my dentist, my teeth were one step from the brightest white on the chart. I was pretty damn excited about that. Just had to jump in with a few comments from others I know that have used the OTC brands. Just be sure to follow the directions. One friend's son made the mistake of using the strips longer than recommended and she said that it ruined his gums. Another had trouble with sensitive teeth after that. As far as smoking goes. All of my grandparents lived well into their 90s except the the one that smoked. I was 16 when he died of lung cancer. That helped me stay clear of smoking. My daughter on the other hand started smoking with her friends as a way to keep her weight down. She used the patch and was able to quit for a number of years. She started smoking again when she changed jobs and there were numerous smokers...Indiana has a relatively high smoking population. It's tough. Good luck to everyone trying to quit. RB: You may edit my posts anytime. I knew your comments were well meant. I had a good laugh too.

Thanks for your input dlh. I work in IN a lot and they are pretty open for smokers. I actually spend a lot of time there. Indy. I kind of like the place. Yes, like I said before a lot of the OTC whiteners mess up your teeth. I made the mistake of leaving a Crest Strip on overnight and my teeth hurt like hell for months!

Hi teakay, I've had more than one person say that after using the strips their teeth really hurt for a very long time. I work in Indy and commute from a small town west of there. It gives me a nice 50 minute drive to listen to my "Favorites" LH on my Ipod. One smoker I work with asked me how I could drive that far without something to do. She always has a cig. in her hand when she drives. No problem here...when you are mesmerized by the LH....just hope all of the lights were green when Velvet was on.

Instead of snacking with leftovers I went out with friends and watched some bands play at a club in Seattle. My ex G/F was there AnneMarie (she is canadian) and as I try to remain civil with the women I date, AnneMarie and I will always be close. I think she is holding me up here! She loved my hair and would not stop touching it/me. Her b/f was back in Canada! AAAARRRGGG!! Why did I break off with her? Because she lived 3 hours away. That was stupid!! She has a wonderful 7 year old boy named Tristian.

Funny. I know the treks are rough but hell, my hubby will drive 10 hours on a Friday night only to have to leave Sunday afternoon to see me when I'm on the road.

Good luck! I truly, after MANY failed relationships, feel that there is a soul mate out there for everyone.
Anyway, back to our original topic....... Has anyone tried any of the 'Fad' diets and how did they work?

Has anyone tried any of the 'Fad' diets and how did they work? Yup you name it I have tried it...Trimspa, Herbalife, the Kaiser diet, the cereal diet, grapefruit (which I despise) diet, counting just fat grams, Zone, Atkins...basically I lost weight w them all but it always came back. It took awhile but the thing that finally worked was exercising every day, keeping a food "checkbook" ( actually thinking in terms of "spending" calories helps me), and drink lots of water. On the other hand though if you want to jump start or just need to lose a few pounds the cereal diet is very effective (two bowls of cereal a day, small dinner, and snack on apples) not saying it's the healthiest way to go and definitely not long term but it worked for me. ;D
