I thought it would be cool to have a thread to introduce each other to little know artists we think are worthy of a larger audience. PJ Harvey is a rock artist from England. She's not very well known here in the states, but she does have a cult following. There's really no one like her. She has an amazing unique voice. She writes all her own songs, and on her last CD she played every instrument except drums. Her albums are:Dry Rid of Me 4-Track Demos To Bring You My Love Dance Hall at Louse Point (w/ John Parish) Is This Desire? Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea Uh Huh Her Her best songs:Dress Sheela-Na-gig Plants & Rags Missed Fountain Legs Hardly Wait Ectasy 50Ft Queenie Man-size The Dancer Long Snake Moan Down By The Water C'mon Billy Angelene Is This Desire? That Was My Veil Civil War Correspondent Big Exit This Is Love A Place Called Home Shame Pocket Knife The Letter

Great thread Rockchick - I LOVE PJ HARVEY! She defined my college existence. I dig your avatar too! Some lesser known artists that I listen to are:
...And you will know us by the trail of dead. These guys are very talented, very pretentious, and very full of their idealistic philosophies and political rantings. HOWEVER.... the music is fantastic and in their live show they throw out any pretention and they straight up ROCK!!! They have a web page trailofdead.com but you can also hear good samples on amazon or itunes.
Smoosh is a band of two sisters. They are like 12 and 14 years old. One plays drums and the other plays a keyboard and sings. They write their own stuff and it's GREAT! Not only is it good for their age, but it's truly cool music!!! They have a web page too smoosh.com
Saves the Day would probably be in that "emo" category of music that I am not too into, but these guys have some wisdom beyond their years that has made their more recent records really cool. Some of it is pop-punk, some of it sounds like the Beatles and some of the lyrics get a little dark and creepy, I love it!! Their live shows are great too!
Compact Deity is a friend of mine from Detroit. They have one Ep and are working on a full album. Screaming metal meets new wave dance music meets Bauhaus. Cool stuff. I think they are on CD Baby.
Anyone ever heard of Marty Casey? You should check him out too - I think he's in a band or something. ;D

Carbon Leaf. They're not too well-known and they're pretty damn good. Their best CD is a two disk set called 5 Alive!.

polarfanI really like the sound of theStart. I really like bands with a female lead. Thanks for the rec. For those interested in PJ Harvey, you can go to her website www.pjharvey.net and check out clips of her songs and some of her videos. I recommend watching her "This Is Love" video.

Cool I'm glad you liked theStart. I heard a PJ Harvey song on the local Indie station yesterday morning and it was really good. I didn't really "get" her back in the day but I was devout metal head. Still am but with age comes a broadening of the mind ;D If you like female fronted band my ALL TIME favorite is The Distillers. She's one angry broad but that's what makes it great. She's going to have a baby any minute now I wonder if that mellows a person?

I've heard of The Distillers but never really heard any of their music. Sounds like something I would like though, so I'll check them out. Some other favorites: Bikini Kill (feminist punk-rock from the 90s) 7 Year Bitch Cat Power XE03 (very noisy industrial rock) www.xeo3music.com/Stiffed www.stiffedmusic.com/Tito & Tarantula Tricky, Portishead, Massive Attack, Hooverphonic (Trip-Hop groups from England)
