Oooooohhhh, I love love Chicago. I am not a native but I have been there a few times. LOL What were your plans while you are there? Sightseeing, museum exploring or shopping? If you want to shop, stay near N. Michigan Ave. I have stayed at the Holiday Inn on I believe Ohio St. or something. Fairly cheap for Chicago but just your basic hotel. And within walking distance to Michigan Ave. Others have stayed at the Hampton Inn and said it was just a little nicer. Now, if you want a luxury hotel, I have stayed at 2, the Conrad (on N Rush St.) and The Renaissance on Wacker in the Loop. Both were gorgeous. While I have never stayed at the Hotel Burnham, a 'boutique hotel', I have heard it is a good place to stay.
Check out the various sites like travelocity.com and expedia.com to see if there are some good rates there. I have seen the Renaissance for $179 (a steal) as well as $479 for the same room.
There are many people here who will be able to give you more info as they have always helped me tons! You will have a blast!! Oh, and I am sooooo jealous! And I was just there about a week ago. LOL
BTW, the public transportation in Chicago rivals New York. If you are going to be doing a lot about town, I would recommend getting the cta visitor pass. It is good for unlimited travel by bus or train and can be purchased for 1, 2, and I believe 3-day increments. Great for getting around town.
Enjoy!

I have recently stayed at the Best Western Inn of Chicago on Ohio St, a block off of Michigan Ave. It was only $99 a night booked right from their site, and they have a rooftop terrace that is very cool. I also recently stayed at the Best Western Hawthorne Terrace which is in the Lakeview neighborhood - I believe it was around $130 or so per night. Both were very nice and clean and reasonably priced - the Inn of Chicago is right downtown and closer to the sightseeing stuff.
I second UandMe about the public transportation visitor passes - being able to ride unlimited makes your stay much more enjoyable and your feet much happier at the end of the day.
I hope that you have a great time! ;D

it all depends on budget. If you can splurge a little, try the Hotel Burnham --(even just for lunch at the Atwood Cafe). It's named for the famous Chicago architect who designed the building. Located on State St, diagonal from Marshall Fields, and it's in one of most famous landmark buildings in town (i think it's called the Rookery), fully restored to its former glory. you should check it out. Oh, and you can see the beautiful Chicago Theater out the bedroom windows -- it's where I stayed to see LH in feb.

Because I live here, I haven't stayed in that many of the hotels. I can give good advice on restaurants and nightlife though. ;D
PM me if you want.
