1865 Shortly after 10 P.M. actor John Wilkes Booth entered the presidential box at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. and fatally shot President Abraham Lincoln.
1912 The Titanic sinks in the north Atlantic after hitting an iceberg. It took only 2 hours and 40 minutes for the Titanic on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, to sink in the waters off Newfoundland. Of the 2200 passengers aboard, 1500 were lost.
