My daughter is reading Lording of the Flies for her English class, and has to find a song that is an analogy to chapter 10 of the book. Chapter 10 is the chapter after the murder of Simon after they think he is the beast, where the boys are feeling remorse for the murder. Jack is using the boys fear of the beast to increase his own power. Here is a link to Spark Notes, if you want to trigger your memory. www.sparknotes.com/lit/flies/section10.rhtmlie songs about being powerful, or losing power Many, many thanks! Deb

Really cheesy and simplistic but this illustrates the despair of breaking down social order and throwing off group morals.. Chances are her teacher probably liked this song once upon a time so that's a plus.. I will think of a better answer later, but I didn't know about time frame.
Losing My Religion Lyrics - Out of Time Album
Life is bigger It's bigger than you And you are not me The lengths that I will go to The distance in your eyes Oh no I've said too much I set it up
That's me in the corner That's me in the spotlight Losing my religion Trying to keep up with you And I don't know if I can do it Oh no I've said too much I haven't said enough I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper Of every waking hour I'm Choosing my confessions Trying to keep an eye on you Like a hurt lost and blinded fool Oh no I've said too much I set it up
Consider this The hint of the century Consider this The slip that brought me To my knees failed What if all these fantasies Come flailing around Now I've said too much I thought that I heard you laughing I thought that I heard you sing I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream That was just a dream

And then of course you can always use I Alone to compare Jack to the leader of a cult and how Jack presumes to be the only one who can save them (keep them together and safe from the beast) It also parallels how the group is isolated.. in the song by the leader in the book by circumstance and then by making Ralph and Piggy outcasts. You could even pull out the fact that the people in the song are figuratively out to sea while this literally is true for the boys. In the song the leader also plays on fear and that is Jack's main tool.
It's easier not to be wise and measure these things by your brains I sank into Eden with you Alone in the church by and by I'll read to you here, save your eyes, You'll need them your boat is at sea Your anchor is up, you've been swept away and the greatest of teacher's won't hesistate to leave you there by yourself chained to faith I alone love you, I alone tempt you I alone love you, fear is not the end of this! I alone love you, I alone tempt you I alone love you... It's easier not to be great, and measure these things by your eyes We long to be here by His resolve Alone in the church by and by to cradle the baby in space and leave you there by yourself chained to faith I alone love you, I alone tempt you I alone love you, fear is not the end of this! I alone love you, I alone tempt you I alone love you Yeah I alone love you OH, now, we took it back too far only love can save us now all these riddles that you burn all come running back to you all these rhythms that you hide only love can save us now all these riddles that you burn YEAH YEAH YEAH!! I alone love you, I alone tempt you I alone love you, fear is not the end of this! I alone love you, I alone tempt you, I alone love you, (yeah-ah-oooooo--yeah-ah ooo...) I alone tempt you,

These ideas aren't the greatest, but they'll do if you are in a time crunch. I'll try to get better ones..
Of course you could use Trees.. the seemingly lighthearted song parallels the idyllic play for the boys however the song has a deeper more sinister message.. "It's a combination for disaster" Just as the boys playful fun was doomed and did lead to a murder so is the relationship in the song doomed. It's fun while it lasts.

DG - Thank you so much for your suggestions! I was scouring song lyrics and only came up with Sunday Bloody Sunday and One, by U2, and they weren't the greatest. I've given her your suggestions and she now has a very relieved look on her face. She isn't enjoying the Lord of the Flies at all, so this project is a misery for her.
Thanks, DG. You rock!

No problem. I HATED that book. Probably once she knows that the pressure to come up w/ ideas is off she will have a more brilliant idea than anyone else could come up with. Wish her luck for me.

Ooh, those were some good suggestions, DG. Are you really an English major?

OH NO.. I just realized that I may have set myself up as an imposter. I don't have an English degree.. I'm a teacher and English is one of my endorsements. I can't stand stories of students in crisis so I had to jump in.

Oh, no big deal. I'm not either. (Although, I would have been if I didn't leave school early and move to LA!!) What grade do you teach?
PS. Gutless, how's the project coming along for your daughter?

She chose I Alone, and presents it on Monday. I just watched the DVD of Lord of the Flies with her, and the person who played Jack was a Marty Casey look-a-like. Both my daughter and I noticed that right away! Here's a link to prints from the movie www.teenidols4you.com/pictures.html?g=Actors&pe=chris_furrhThanks for all of your help. It's greatly appreciated.
