Hey everyone,
I am thinking about doing the Out of the Darkness Overnight walk down in Chicago in August. It's sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. You have to raise $1000 in order to participate, which seems like a lot to me. I've never done any type of fundraising before, especially just by myself like this. I was wondering if any of you have done anything like this before, and if so, if you had any tips about fundraising. Is it possible for me to raise that much money myself? I want to be involved because it's a very important cause, but I have so many other things going on in my life with school and work that I can't devote a ton of time to fundraising. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

One of the best tips I've heard is to just use your email list. I know it's lame, but start with people you know, then work your way out.

Yeah, start with those you know...friends, family, co-workers...explain what it's about and why it's important to you. It might be a good idea to suggest they donate a certain amount - depending on their current finicial status and how close they are to you (generally the colser a relationship you have with a person the more likely they are to give). And, of course, be direct, don't hint you want the money, say you do...and again, explain the reason and importance. Hope this helps! Tooks
