I hadn't thought of "You're All I Need" in ages. What about "I Saw Red" by Warrant?

I can't believe I didn't list any Def Leppard. When Love & Hate Collide is another song that got totally overplayed whenever I was dumped.

The two Ellington songs that you mentioned, Cheza, were excellant. One of my favorites by Ellington is "Caravan", however, it's not a break-up song.
How about "Send in the Clowns"? I know for sure that Sinatra sang this one, but I think I heard Peggy Lee sing it first. Not certain though.

Thanks, chicagojoe. I used to introduce some of my students to Ellington by showing a tape I had of Play On! which uses his music but follows the basic plotline of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night minus Viola's twin brother...in it Viola goes from the south to Harlem to visit her uncle, Jester (= Feste in Shakspeare), she wants to be a songwriter. Jester tells her songwriting is a man's world and dresses her as a man to present her to The Duke (= Orsino) who pines away for the Cotton Club vocalist Lady Liv (= Olivia)...and then there are the characters of Rev, who loves Liv and is tricked into visiting her in a yellow zoot suit (ala Malvolio in his yellow stockings and cross-garters), Sweets the bandleader (= Sir Toby Belch) and his girl, Miss Mary (= Maria)...in the end it all works out of course and Duke ends up with Viola and Liv ends up with Rev instead since there is no Sebastian. The name of the play is not only from Ellington's song, but also from one of the opening lines of the play, which belongs to Duke Orsino - ""If music be the food of love, play on; Give me excess of it, that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken, and so die."...translation: If music makes love grow, then play it to excess until I'm sick of love and stop loving.
What about "I Heard It Through the Grapevine"? On the flip side (since I just finished watching the Tony Awards) - from the movie Grease - "Hopelessly Devoted To You" and from the play it was based on "It's Raining On Prom Night"...in the play Sandy does not go to the dance...she listens to it on the radio. I'm curious to see how they make that work in the new production since they will be incorporating material from the movie as well into the revival.

Ladies, you're coming up with some awsome songs.
Cheza. Ellington was truely one of the greats. By the way, my brother has the "Twelfth Night" on DVD. It's really great. Sounds like you're a big fan of jazz. That's cool. I've been trying to find some break-up songs by Louis Armstrong, but no luck so far. "St. Louis Blues" is one of my favorites by Armstrong. I like the extended version with the trumpet solos.

Chicagojoe, when I was in school one of our marching band shows in high school opened with "St. Louis Blues" I think the same show originally included Ellington's "Solitude", but that got cut later. I just really dig the whole jazz vibe. I'm tend to get perturbed when I hear the school jazz band playing rock and pop songs and no JAZZ!!!! I'm thinking about seeing what can be done about that next year. Peace.
