Cheza. Michael Bolton helped write a Kiss song? That's a shocker. I'm also surprised that Burt wrote that Naked Eyes song. Huh. Didn't he write some of the Carpenters' songs? I think "Close to You" was one of them. Speaking of the Carpenters, they must have done some good break-up songs. I need to look into this.
Jill. I graduated in 1977. Seems like it was in another lifetime. "Could This Be Magic" and "Copa Cavana" by Barry Manilow were really good songs.

YES. You sound as shocked as I was the night I looked up the lyrics and saw those two names side by side!
As for The Carpenters - couldn't "Superstar" be considered a break-up song = "Don't you remember you told me you loved me baby, said you'd be back again someday baby...I love you, I really do."
JS, Air Supply is hosting an infomercial now...soft rock methinks...I saw it the other night and about fell off the bed.

Did someone already mention "Don't Speak" by No Doubt? I like that song.
How about "Angie" by The Rolling Stones? Angie, Angie, when will those clouds all disappear? Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here? With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats, You can't say we're satisfied, But Angie, Angie, you can't say we never tried.
Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said good-bye? Angie, I still love you, remember all those nights we cried? All the dreams we held so close seemed to all go up in smoke, Let me whisper in your ear; Angie, Angie, where will it lead us from here?
Oh, Angie, don't you weep, all your kisses still taste sweet, I hate that sadness in your eyes, But Angie, Angie, ain't it time we said good-bye?
With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats, You can't say we're satisfied, But Angie, I still love you, Baby, Ev'rywhere I look I see your eyes. There ain't a woman that comes close to you, Come on Baby, dry your eyes. But Angie, Angie, ain't it good to be alive? Angie, Angie, they can't say we never tried.

Jill. Yeah, we got that one on July 12. But that's one worth repeating. Good song. "Don't Speak" that I mentiioned earlier was written by Gwen Steffani when she was with No Doubt. The base player had just broken-up with her so she wrote this song, knocked on his door and read the lyrics to him. Sort of shuving it in his face. It turned out to be a hit song. You and me We used to be together Everyday together always I really feel That I'm losing my best friend I can't believe This could be the end It looks as though you're letting go And if it's real Well I don't want to know Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts Our memories Well, they can be inviting But some are altogether Mighty frightening As we die, both you and I With my head in my hands I sit and cry Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no) Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts It's all ending I gotta stop pretending who we are... You and me I can see us dying...are we? Don't speak I know just what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't tell me cause it hurts (no, no, no) Don't speak I know what you're thinking I don't need your reasons Don't tell me cause it hurts Don't tell me cause it hurts! I know what you're saying So please stop explaining Don't speak, don't speak, don't speak, oh I know what you're thinking And I don't need your reasons I know you're good, I know you're good, I know you're real good Oh, la la la la la la La la la la la la Don't, Don't, uh-huh Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush don't tell me tell me cause it hurts Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush darlin' Hush, hush don't tell me tell me cause it hurts

Nearly asleep at 1 am I thought of Dionne Warwick for some reason and "Walk on by" came to mind. I love that song and Melissa Manchester's version too.
I know at one point we were looking for more current stuff. I like Fergies "Big girls don't cry" and Gwen Stefani's "Cool" it seems like the oldies are better though? To me anyway, cause I am turning into my mother?!?! Lord help me. My mom loved a Joan Baez song "I never dreamed you'd leave in summer" it is a really moving song. My mom was caught between being a hippie and a beat nick and church lady.. ;D ;D but she liked good music.

Hubby came up with a lot of them and I forgot them already. I can only remember "Separate Ways" by Journey as one he picked. I can't believe I forgot them?

If I didn't write it down, I would forget the names too. I'm like the dude in the movie...... aahhhhh....... what's it called...... Oh yeah!!!! "Momento"! ;D
Those are good songs that you mentioned. "Diamonds and Rust" is by Joan Baez and that's one of my favorites. Great lyrics. Great melody. Sounds like your mom had good taste in music.

Cjoe I had forgotten the album name. Thanks. I looked it up on Amazon and was able to hear some others I liked Jesse Diamonds & Rust Fountain of sorrows wow it all came flooding back to me, listening to my moms records before she came home from work. It has to be almost 30 yrs and it chocked me up. seems like she died just last year not 24 yrs ago ... on a lighter note I have The Gap Band and "You dropped a bomb on me" and A Taste of Honey with their hit "Sukiyaki" there I go again dating myself.... ;D remember those?

Jill.
I sampled Sukiyaki and YDABOM on Amazon. I can vagely remember hearing those songs when I was a kid. Good break-up songs.
I wasn't really a Joan Baez fan until I saw her perform on PBS about ten years ago. After seeing the show I went out and bought her greatest hits. Diamonds and Rust does me in every time I hear it.
My mom died in 2002. Really miss her a lot. But I'm faithful, as I know you are, and I know for an absolute fact that we'll both see our moms again, as well as the rest of our loved ones. Someday.

Thanks Cjoe That got me to thinking about "Fire and Rain" from James Taylor and I guess that may be more about a death or two people who aren't friends anymore?? But it is sad nonetheless. A break up is still a break up right?? I love just about anything from Broadway musicals to the Bee-Gees since there was a big gap in my brothers and me. Music really is so important for the milestones in our lives. I cannot imagine a music free environment. Hubby says we should have a "greatest Satanic Death Metal" category...... what a goober!!! Have a great one gang Jilly

Jill. Your husband sounds like a funny guy. Talking about Broadway musicals, "The Impossable Dream" from "The Man of LaMancha" is a good song. Do you remember that one? If you hear a song that you really like, it can totally alter the mood your in. It's much like taking a drug. Imagine movies without soundtracks or church without hymes. So yeah, life would be much differant without music.

The movie version of "Man of La Mancha" was on Turner Classic Movies just the other morning. I love that show! I used to show the movie to the sophomores when we studied an excerpt from Don Quixote, but lately I've been using the TNT "Don Quixote" with John Lithgow only instead. Next year I don't think I'll show it all the way through...but I might incorporate "La Mancha" back in instead...hmmm...decisions. Thanks for your wishes for safe travels, Chicagojoe. We made it there and back without getting too lost

Cheza I should check that out. I love John Lithgow. He scared me in Raising Cane. He is a genius though. I have heard the music but never seen it,or read Don Quixote, shame on me.
Oh yeah I remember another folk song from a Peter Paul and Mary album my mom had that song "I'm leaving on a jetplane"...another forced breakup song??
Later gang Jill

Cheza. I have to say I never saw the version with John Lithgow. I should keep an eye out for that one. However, I have the one with Peter O'Toole and Sofia Loren on DVD. I also saw the play about ten years ago. The late Raoul Julia and Sheena Easten were in it. It was very good.
Jill. ILOAJP is a good one. They played that one on the radio a lot and on all of the variety shows back then.

Jilly, Raising Cane scares me too. I love it though. I confess...I have never read Don Quixote...not the entire book. It's MASSIVE. I have a copy. Maybe I'll get around to it someday, but I haven't yet. Chicagojoe - It's not "Man of La Mancha"...just a retelling of Cervantes tale. It took Cervantes 25 years to write the first part of it and it'll probably take me that long to get around to reading it. Trivia: Cervantes died on the same day as William Shakespeare Raul Julia was a fantastic actor! I love his work. How fortunate you were to see him as Quixote! Have you ever heard the original soundtrack for the musical Nine with him? It's fantastic...speaking of that... I'll submit "Be On Your Own" from the musical Nine, which is sang by the character of Luisa when she's breaking up with her filmmaker husband, Guido Contini (Julia's role), due to his many affairs... Be on your own. You’ve’ always talked about your need to travel, Now go off, unravel on your own.
Go find some restaurant attendant, Go show her how independent you have grown.
Go on... Be on your way.
There’s not a single reason I can find To make me want to keep you one more day.
There isn’t any sort of word that you could say. There isn’t any sort of price that you could pay.
There isn’t any sort of magic To avoid this tragi-comic little play We need to play Be on your way.
Go on... No need to carry out this masquerade When all that we’re about’s begun to fade. I set you free.
There’s not much longer to complain, I’ll soon relieve you of your pain When I set you free.
If that is all you wish to have, then I agree. No need for thanks, your just rewards will be my fee.
Go off and live your petty fictions Full of blatant contradictions you can’t see, And what will be Is that you’ll leave,
And you’ll take with you all you own From a to z ... And all of me. Right after that she leaves (and according to what I've read) it's the first time Guido is alone on stage in the play...and this is LATE in the play. Nine is unusual because it was written for a large group of women and one man...the actor playing Guido. Although there has been a revamp to include more men if someone does not have a large company of women and wants to perform the show. It is very operatic in scale though...very challenging. I've heard of people putting it on the roster for their seasons and then dropping it.

Cheza. I know a while back they were selling the abridged version of Don Quixote. That’s more like my speed. That’s an interesting fact about Cervantes and Shakespeare dying on the same day. Life’s strange that way. Yeah, Raul Julia had a great voice. I never heard of the play “Nine”, so I sampled some of the songs on Amazon and thought they were really good. “Be On Your Own” is a great song for this thread!
