Wow it seems the Harry Potter series is quite a hit I will have to start reading them. I thought maybe they were only for kids but so many adults are reading and loving them, I feel as though I am missing out now. My niece has the collection that is out so far. I should borrow them from her. Jilly
The only thing I read recently is Uncle John's Bathroom Reader.did you know that Mike Nesmith of the Monkees fame has a famous mom? His mom invented White Out. Cool Huh?

I knew that! Yep...his mom invented White-Out. Did you know Davy Jones was once the Artful Dodger in an English production of the musical "Oliver!"...and I think he wanted to be or maybe worked as a jockey before The Monkees show.

Hi Jilly - I'd fully recommend the Harry Potter books, I've read them all and eagerly awaiting for the new one to be delivered! Also, thought I'd mention, I've started a book by Bill Bryson - the life of the Thunderbolt Kid - it's quite funny, a bloke telling his story, being a child in America in the 1950's.

I will admit it...I've never read a Harry book. I tried when I got the first one, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe I can try again at some point. A student told me the first one is the hardest one to get through because it's exposition - setting up the story and introducting all the characters. Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment has fallen by the wayside for now. Right now I'm reading a novel by Anne Tyler called A Slipping-Down Life and I'm hooked on it. I even read it during breaks at my workshop today. I watched the film first - and GE if you see this - the book is VERY different and quick to read. Every Casey fangirl should read this one methinks...as GE said in the movie or soundtrack thread - the "fangirl devotion"... P.S. GE...that doesn't exactly play out the same way in the book either. You should read it.

A while back Tracy and I watched the movie "Freedom Writers" and we saw that there is an actual book compiled of the students journal entries.
I checked it out for her and I to read I have been enjoying it. It has some really moving entries, and if you think you may have a bit of knowledge about what it's like to live in an inner city some entries will shock you. It is a touching look at the struggle for teens trying to find themselves in a war zone of gangs and drugs and domestic violence. Erin Grewell the English teacher, also included some of her entries as she struggled in her first year teaching the kids no one else wanted.
Jill p/s the book is titled"Freedom Writers Diary, their story their words"

I saw that book at the bookstore, but I've yet to pick it up. Several people recommended that film during our workshops this summer. I need to add it to my Netflix list.

Guitargirl, thats so cool that you found that book. I love the Library. Free is my preference
I did end up buying the "Laurel Canyon: The inside story of Rock & Roll" for my brother and he loves it! I had to get him the paperback version though. It was only 15 dollars at Barnes & Noble and the hardbound "coffee table version" was 50 dollars. I wish I had 50 to spare..Geez! Anyway I also got him a book called "I was there" and it is stories of all the great rock and roll concerts and testimonies from fans. Like Woodstock, the last Janis Joplin concert, the last Hendrix concert etc. He is loving that too. That also was 15 bucks so I did pretty good. Books Rock!!!

Guitargirl, I read "Story to Story" last year. It was an interesting book. I got the guys to sign it for me when I met them last June. I was talking to Jon about when they were in Perth and he said he still has nightmares about that time. Though the story about Captain Thong and Spiderman were pretty funny.

Guitargirl I haven't read either book but I think I might after your reviews. Cheza Tracy came over here to swim the day my brother and nephew came from Cali and she brought a guy with her and she totally ingnored my nephew. On top of that she was high as well as this dude. I have not talked to her since. I have invited her over a few times and she wont come because she has friends to meet. Party friends All I can do is keep praying for her and hope her partying doesn't kill her jill

I am reading a book my guitar teacher wrote: www.lulu.com/content/974593I haven't finished it yet, so won't write a review just yet, but I am really enjoying it! Since it's about someone taking guitar lessons, I always grin when I read something in the book that I've heard at class. Like "A good plan is a plan that works." eta: You might want to know the title without having to click on the link! --- "From Silence to Sound."

That sounds like a very interesting book, Dawn. I'm hoping to get a bit of Orwell in this summer. I keep meaning to read his books, but then I get pulled off track. I think 1984 is more of a priority for me than Animal Farm. All of my students who have read Animal Farm lately HATE IT. I read Animal Farm last year but it didn't interest me that much. In English we just got finished reading 1984 and I must say I prefered it.

Have any of you read Twilight by Stehphanie Meyer? I highly recomend it. Also some really good ones are The Lord of the Rings, Little Women, A Bend in the Road and The Notebook *both by Nicholas Sparks*, Inkheart *Cornelia Funk, The Wheel of Time Series *Robert Jordan*
If any of you ever get to read the play John Lennon & Me by Cherrie Bennett I highly suggest it. It focuses on a young girl with cystic fibrosis. It's really a wonderful play. Star, the main character, has been again admitted into Heart House, a place for sick kids, with a new room mate, Courtney, who is her comlete opposite. It's a really wonderful play that the One Act at my High school is performing. I'm in one act and I'm on crew. I've got most of the play memorized by now because I've worked so much on the lines with everyone.
