Thomas was very believable. I hope Joe is as believable. It is very difficult to write for the opposite sex! A friend of mine (and fellow writer) and I were discussing that one night after I started "In Justice"...which is turning out to be much longer than I had anticipated. One of the kids was reading a printout of it I had at work with me one day.
A novel, eh? The way my story is taking it just might end up in novella form or something like that at the rate I'm going!!!
As for killing a character you didn't plan on killing, I know what you mean. I've got a play that kind of worked out that way. I toyed with several endings, but the one I've landed on the last few drafts just "feels" right.
A while back a fellow theatre geek wanted to read it, and I wanted feedback. He said he didn't see the death at the end of the play coming at all. I feared I had foreshadowed it a bit too much. Alas, an old theatre acquaintance who writes plays says it is not long enough for two acts, which is what I had envisioned...it has a defining breaking point that I feel the audience needs an intermission after...a VERY heated argument. I worry that it will be dated, because I finally had to pin it down to a time period...but then again, it could have went on forever the way Iraq is going.
Peace.
