I got a chance to speak with Billy for a few minutes at Highland. First off he loved the postcards (Thanks Radioclash). Then I talked his ear off ( ) about INTERNET marketing. In a nutshell (and he appeared interested when he heard these numbers) The Arctic Monkeys sold 122,000 copies of their debut album in Europe the very 1st day it was out. That is with no radio or video play. Hawthorne Heights sold 555,000 copies of their album so far with very little radio or video support. To put in perspective Gwen Steffani with name recognition TONS of radio and video support sold 2.5 million albums in a year and was considered one of the big hits of 2005. These guys succeeded because their indie record labels relied almost exclusively on the Internet. Myspace, artist pages, yahoo, links to every site they could possibly tie in to the band. Basically Billy was like do whatever it takes (provided it's legal or cant be traced back to the band ) I propose we as fans do a mass emailing with the myspace site link. You know how fast those chain mails, jokes etc spread? Why not spread LH to our family, friends, co workers, the guy you blew off last Saturday nite whoever...Make it tongue in cheek "Forward this email to 10 people and you'll have good luck for 10 years" be creative. ;D Actual in person street teaming, I know it's more expensive but those post cards and business cards with the LH info are like gold! People love them and are more likely to keep them as opposed to regular paper flyer's. I passed them out and said "only free souvenir you'll get all nite" hahaha many people used them to get their autographs etc. Best place to ST during intermission on those long ladies room lines. Talk about a captured audience. Most of these ladies were buzzing about the band amazed by them etc even those who were JD lovers were more receptive since it was fresh in their minds. I also put piles of the cards/flyer's on the merch table and check back later and they were gone. Most people took one as they purchased (INXS) merch. Ok this is gonna sound a little silly but this is based on actual study. Obviously wear your LH shirt, carry the cards in an envelope or folder leave your purse behind with a friend lock it up whatever. When your walking around with nothing but the cards people think your a little more "official". I was getting asked questions like they thought I worked for the record company (of course I never lie I tell them I'm street team but they can think street team is part of record label) look your Hammerhead best, be friendly, and when somebody makes snide remarks about LH (which you'll hear some doozies) just ignore it and keep going. No use wasting your energy on someone who is not open minded. No matter how much you wanted to punch that bee-otch in the face. But I digress. That's what i can think of for now...hope some of this helps or at least makes you laugh.

Thank you so much polarfan for typing that up!!!! (And it did make me laugh, too ;D)
Those are some great ideas and it's interesting to know Billy's.
I, too, saw the article about the Arctic Monkeys and how they marketed through the internet and read the articles. Very impressive! Of course, it would help to see a little bit of exposure in the music magazines like Hawthorne Heights gets, but maybe that's to come. The People magazine article should do wonders!
I'm actually clueless when it comes to myspace, but if someone comes up with an idea or step by step instructions I'll do it!

What about a "Spread the LOVE this Valentine's Day" campaign? If we could get Lh fans to send all their friends, mailing lists, etc. a "Spread the LOVE this Valentine's Day" e-card, with a link to the Lh site, we may get a lot of people interested.
Thank you so much, polarfan! Everything you said makes total sense! We need to harness the power of the internet. Do you have any specifics about how the Arctic Monkeys did this? I'll have to go back and check out those articles. I read the headlines, but didn't pay attention really.
Could we have a Lh Valentine's e-card competiton here at MC.org? There probably wouldn't be any prizes, just bragging rights. Maybe Cindy and Amy would feature the e-cards at a prominent place on the website.
What do you all think?

I was thinking the same thing when I read your "Spread the Love" post! We could take advantage of the "Love"hammers and in "Trees" being the first single. I'm all for it. I have no idea how to make an e-card, but I'll see what I can do. Also, I didn't find any juicy tidbits when I read the Artic Monkey articles although I was definitely looking for them!

Here's another idea for a Valentine's day tie-in - How about we have a banner that reads "Hammer Your Love with a Message & Some Music" or "Hammer your Love with a Valentine" and it has a link to a webpage where people can submit a little love message for their Valentine The banner would have graphics of the band and of course a plug for the website And on the webpage where people leave their message, "Trees" can be playing in the background. I think Sony still has this out as a freebie ? And there can be a message that says "While your here gift your sweetie with a new CD along with a blurb about the CD and where it can be found and also a link to itunes where you can actually "gift it" I don't know if this all would be possible to set up in a timely manner. I've never made a webpage or even a clickable banner before. Maybe the easier thing would be just to create clickable banners - that either take you to itunes, www.lovehammers.com, sony's store ? ? ? Just brainstorming here.....

More brainstorming.... I think I was making things way too complicated in my last post. I think e-cards and banners would be superb! Here's some ideas I had for banners (and some can be used towards the e-card): 1. "Why settle for 1 guy when you can have 4 this Valentine's!" With a photo of each of the guys and their names written next to/under the photo and then www.lovehammers.com on the bottom 2. On the left part of the banner an assortment of those heart-shaped candies that spell out messages with "www" on one, and "lovehammers" underneath that and ".com" next to that one. And then individual photos of the guys on the right part of the banner with a candy heart next to each one that has the each guy's name imprinted on it. 3. I'm just starting on this idea, but something like - "Want to unwrap something _____ this Valentine's?" and then a reference to unwrapping the new CD Haven't quite figured that one out yet. 4. I really like the graphic that appeared on the pink "Trees" shirts that were being sold briefly. The huge tree in black with a pink heart and LH in the middle. Also, the graphics on the new site/album are really handy since the cherubs are very cupid-like. I do have some more masculine or more universal ideas if these aren't liked. Let me know your opinions and ideas. I'll try to see what I can come up with visually tomorrow.

Interesting, Trees - especially the cartoon. Definitely catches the eye, etc. Thanks!!! I'll also look through the creativity vault.

Ok, I looked around for a free e-card servise and found this: www.bravenet.comTo get the service free, when you make the e-cards, there are ads. To be able to send ad-free e-cards, you have to get a paid membership, which is $4.95/month or $39.95/year. You can add music, but only midi files. The free account allows you 20 images; the paid account allows you 100 images. Or we could get 5 free accounts, and have e-cards for specific holidays on each one. Like one account for Valentines, one account for birthdays, etc. If we got the paid membership, with 100 images, we could have birthday e-cards, anniversary e-cards, e-cards for every holiday. I think the fans might be willing to help with the cost. $40/year is not that much. I've set up a test page here. This is the image I made to test this out with: I put it together quickly, so it's not that great. You can see what the e-card will look like here: pub45.bravenet.com/postcard/pickup.php?usernum=3838003398&id=FBC4B7F45

RE: the Trees Comic.. Maybe we can ask the artist, manleydays, to come up with a comic promoting the release of the new CD. He's registered here. That would be something that we could send to people too. In one of his posts, he actually mentioned maybe doing one about the new CD. This is his website: www.manleydays.blogspot.com/. We could add a link to his site (and he could include it in the image too). His comics are SO funny!

Ceeje - I'll check out the bravenet site.
I only had time to do a tiny bit of research into making e-cards last night and was looking at actual software, but that site may be the better thing to do.
I think the more cards the better. That way there's more choices so anyone who wants to do one - go ahead! I'd love to see it ;D
I had one more banner idea: It would read "Wouldn't you like to be a Hammerhead, too?" and then the rest ?? I haven't decided.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One more thing. One of the articles I did read about band promotion had an interview with one band whose biggest draw was making a "wacky/fun" website where their song clips were playing in the background. This site happened to be about pumpkin carving and had interesting photos. They said they got tons of hits and a lot of people would click through and purchase the music.
I've started a thread about the Valentines Day campaign. Hopefully, we can get a lot of people interested. People can post their graphics or their ideas for graphics if they can't make them.
Do you think we could come up with a list of things that the Lh webmaster could add to make the site more popular? Would s/he be receptive to hearing our ideas? (Just one person submitting the ideas, but lots of people submitting ideas.)
