You should post is sometime. I really enjoyed it! You're very talented. Here it is: Beneath the Mire In a manse upon the mire, whilst I stared into the fire, Pondering enigmas that had since eluded my ether-weathered mind, As I sat there, eyelids slowly drawing, there suddenly came a clawing, As if something was gently clasping, grasping at my window blind. ‘’Twas just a bird,’ I murmured, ‘rasping at my window blind— Just a bird and nothing else in mind.’
And distinctly I recall, though wary, the bleakness of that January, As each dying wind swept blindly across the moor. By time’s passing my heart was ravaged;—eagerly I sought to end it, Revolver in hand, my soul having been savaged—savaged by one Lenore— By that cruel and unwavering creature whom demons named Lenore— Unnamable here forevermore.
And the stealthy silken uncertain rustling of each sooty curtain Thrilled me—chilled me—filled me with terrors yet unknown; And now, to still the beating of my pulse, I trembled repeating ‘’Tis just some figments of my imagination life-like shown— Only my imagination running wild, me being on my own— That it is, and nothing else be known.’
Gritting teeth, my eyes grew narrow, and headed to the window straight as an arrow, ‘Damned bird,’ hissed I, ‘or squirrel, or snake, your silence I wouldn’t mind; But frankly, my thoughts I was grasping, when so gently you came rasping, And so hastily you came clasping, grasping at my window blind, That I assumed I hadn’t truly heard you’—and here I threw wide the blind— To see darkness there, nothing to find.
As deeper into that darkness I found myself leaning, standing there without meaning, Doubting, wondering thoughts no mortal dared to think before But still the silence sat unbroken, and the darkness seemed to cloak in— That blackness only one word was hissed in vocal fear, ‘Lenore!’ That voice was mine that echoed back that name, ‘Lenore!’ Simply this, and nothing more.
Back into the chamber turning, all my thoughts within me churning, Soon again, I heard that rasping even louder than before. ‘My God!’ said I, ‘surely the sound, that noise lurks behind my door; So let me see then, what this mystery that may be explored— Let my heart be still for but a moment and see behind the door;— ‘Twill be the wind, and nothing more!’
‘Twas here that I flung wide the door, when, within seconds (I believe a score), Into the manse stepped a man of singular countenance. Not the least acknowledgement made he; nor a minute stopped or stayed he; But with the air of a lord or lady, leaned against my chamber door— Leaned against the Doric column right beside my chamber door— Leaned, and smiled, and said nothing more.
Then this pallid form beguiling my tragic mask into smiling, By the wan and weary expression its death mask wore, ‘Though thy face be void of searching, thou,’ I said, ‘art not an urchin. Thou ghastly, grim, and ageless figure wandering in from the midnight shore— Tell me, what is thy name on Midnight’s Plutonian shore?’ Quoth my visitor: ‘Nevermore.’
Much as I marveled at this ghoul who heard discourse so plainly, Though it’s answer, little meaning to me bore; But one cannot help agreeing, that no living human being Ever leaned against a column by another’s chamber door— Any creature leaning on the column on another’s chamber door, With such a name as ‘Nevermore.’
But the wraith, standing ever lonely against that archway, spoke only, That one peculiar word, as if his soul he did speak for, No other sound did he utter, not a word did he mutter— Till I nigh silently murmured, ‘Other friends have left me before— And on the morrow, he’ll be gone, as a ghost through my door.’ At this, the man hissed, ‘Nevermore.’
Startled by the broken silence, I sat up in stark defiance And strode to stand in front of man and column and door; Then upon its sallow face I stared, as my mind slowly came to bear Possibility upon possibility, thinking what this silent ghost of yore— This pale, gaunt, wan, and ominous creature of yore Could mean by saying ‘Nevermore.’
Then, it seemed the air grew dense, as if by some strange incense Burned from somewhere nearly below the boards of my floor. ‘Ghast,’ I cried, ‘thy lord hat sent thee—you foul creature to torment me To distract—distract me from thoughts of Lenore! To cause me to forget that demon-spawned Lenore!’ And quoth the creature: ‘Nevermore.’
‘Wraith!’ said I, ‘thing of evil!—wraith still, if fiend or devil!— Whether tempter sent or tempest tossed you here ashore, Devastated yet still as silent, even in this world so violent— To my home by terrors haunted—speak thus truly, I implore— Is there—is there revenge for me? Speak thee truly, I implore!’ Quoth the stranger, ‘Nevermore.’
‘So be that word our sign of parting, ghoulish fiend!’ I shrieked stricken— ‘Go back to the storm and the Midnight’s Plutonian shores! Leave no footprints as a token of the lies thy lips hath spoken! Leave my loneliness unbroken!—Leave the entrance of my door! Take your knife out from my heart, take thy form from my door!’ Then spoke the shade, ‘Nevermore.’ And the vistant never moving, is still standing, still leaning Up against that Doric column near my chamber door. And his eyes, glazed though they be, seem to always watch upon me, And the candlelight around him throws a shadow on the floor So my dying soul that lies there smothered by that shadow by the door Will rise again Nevermore.
