I was just interested to see if Marty had changed the way he sang LH songs since being on RS:INXS? Anyone out there been to a LH concert since?
I'm just interested because he obviously changed and evolved on the show to a different way of singing to how you hear him sing with LH and I wondered if that has flowed on.

Probably so. He said they were redoing Eyes Can't See, Clouds and something else in the recording studio so I guess these 3 songs will be in the new album. Gosh, I just can't wait for this to come out.

I have to say that it's not that I don't like the older Marty voice but for some totally weird strange reason everytime I listen to MOMM I get a sore throat just wondering how he manages to get that sound out, it's very effective though and he so owns it. He should trademark "the scream".

Hi! I posted a thread about Marty's vocal coach in the "Marty" folder. Check it out!

Does everyone think that Marty's voice changed all that much during the RS: INXS show? After intense research into the man and the voice I'm not sure that it really has. I think that the whole 'Marty finding a new voice' thing is more a creation of the show than reality. After listening to Ultrasound, L'Strange and MOMM about a million times it seems clear that he's always had both the soft tones and the 'screamy' tones to his voice. I don't think that he couldn't sing softer songs but that he and the Lovehammers chose to take the band into a harder direction. The songs on MOMM are harder rock than the previous albums. Reality TV is all about casting a person into a roll and Marty's roll was 'most improved'. I shouldn't complain since it worked so well for him! ;D Anyway, just my rambling 2 cents.

I think probably working with a vocal coach helped Marty strengthen parts of his voice, which in turn has perhaps given him more confidence about using different parts of his voice more than he has before. He said in one interview that he didn't necessarily realize he could use his softer "Wish You Were Here" voice very effectively on stage. That doesn't mean it wasn't there before (because I think it clearly was on some of the recordings), just that he's got more confidence in it now on stage. But as for truly transforming his voice into something it wasn't before...no, I think that is very much a theme mostly created by the show. They liked the "screamer to singer" theme with him, which did seem to work in his favor for his "storyline" on the show, but I don't think it's really a tremendous reflection of reality. -------------- Here's the newspaper quote I was thinking of before: Chicago Tribune: It was great to see that different side of you. Are you glad you got that out there?Yeah, I didn't know I could sing like that. I'm usually so upbeat singing or energized and aggressive. I sang in that voice before, but I never knew I could actually use it live and sing in it. ------------------

I know what you mean about his voice not changing that much. His voice is smoother and his range much broader, though. I prefer the earlier songs to the ones on MOMM. If I don't get my Sleeper fix at least twice a day, I go nuts. My previous obsession was Creep. When I hear the screams at the climax (sigh) of Creep, I can't help but think of how different Eyes Can't See would sound now. That's one of the songs they're recording for the new album, and I'll bet it's going to sound awesome.

His voice is the same but he learned to use it in different ways, that will only better his live performance! Good topic!! Cheers, RB

With all of this talk about predicting what Marty will sound like now I can't wait to hear how he sounds from those that are going to the Metro on Wednesday. I'm pumped and I'm not even going.

I posted on the Marty part of the board about his new voice coach--Roger Love--having coached Reese Witherspoon from being a non-singer to doing all the songs in the new Johnny Cash movie. I think Marty really did his homework (not surprised--he seems to be a good business person in all areas) in picking his people to surround him.

I think he has expanded his range, and improved his pitch and intonation abilities. He now has power through all parts of his range, without having to resort to screaming, unless he *wants* to scream.
The things he did on "Creep" were beyond anything he's recorded before. I think he's finding out that his voice is like an expensive sports car, and he's learning how to handle it with both power and control, to get the maximum performance out of it, rather than just "putting the pedal to the floor" at all times.

I think Marty sounded about the same on the LH tunes at Tweeter since the show. The first few songs his voice sounded scratchy and like he wasn't quite into his voice, and then it just kicked in. The more he sang the better he got. I think his voice is incredible whether singing in a softer tone or screaming at the top of his lungs. Both make me tremble.
