I started out as a psychology major in college and transitioned to the arts. I studied everything... A lot I use everyday, but not everything. I don't use any of my statistics (and I almost failed that class). I even took Spanish, but I don't remember how to speak it...

Fly-- You can start doing some music/band related things while you do college. Does your college have a college radio station? There lots of music contacts to be made in college radio--I was the general manager of my college station and we promoted a lot of concerts, I had lots of band friends then. Or maybe you could try to get a local radio station music internship--which would help you get an insiders view of radio. Or find one of the concert promoters in town and see if they have an internship. There's so many things you can do when you are in college--people are always looking for free labor! Okay I'm taking off the career counselor hat and stepping back! LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D Here's the thing-I don't believe radio is going to be the true future of music. I think its going to more internet. In my view, and this could just be my punk rock cynicism, but a lot of what's on the radio is what the moguls WANT played, not necessarily what's best in music today. I think that the interet is going to do for bands what touring did for Nirvana and the Velvet Underground. I just need to find my "in." I'm just saying that if you want to be in music--it's good to know what is what everywhere. Clubs and radio are going to play a part. Internet is going to be a big part. As we said it's all politics. The radio stations are the big corporate machines--internet more grass roots. Knowledge is power. I wasn't saying you were going to try to be in radio--just get to meet people you can call on the phone. It really is a small industry. If you really want to be a manager you got to be able to play as many avenues as you can for your bands. Some will attract the big corporate radio--others will need different handling. It is like having many things in your tool kit.

I started out as a Comm/journalist-y major, then math or psych, then finally US Government. There's nothing quite as beautiful as ripping apart election data...

Glad we could talk it out for you Jet. Good luck. Your son is blessed because you are thinking so seriously about it. Whatever you decide you can make work.

It is like having many things in your tool kit. Yeah, I know. It really is a tiny world-I mean, there are a lot of bands out there, but only a small portion of them are really, very good and are serious about it. I would love to see the powers that be split up and for radio to become independent again, but that's not going to happen for a long time. I just hate seeing real, serious musicians who have clawed themselves out of the gutter and done it the traditional way being snubbed because they're not on the list while bands like Hinder get free passes. And yes, I hate Hinder. A lot. But that's another rant.
