My Review:
'Play some acoustic Pantera"
"Freebird!!!!"
Those are just a couple of the lines, Dale the tireless drunken heckler/ Shot buyer would yell at the top of his lungs, during David, and Marty's sets.
Cambridge, OH, is one of the strangest places I have ever been, (that’s saying a lot) within the first few minutes of driving down the 5 city blocks that is Cambridge you notice that there are people along the streets. But when you get closer, you realize they are fake, singing Manikins. Yes, manikins. They line the streets of Cambridge, some singing, some preparing horseshoes, some throwing snowballs. As David Carri described them: "it’s like driving through children of the corn!"
I agree David.
My mom and I got there about 8pm, the show didn’t start until 10 so we chilled in the car. Mainly because Shakers is lets say a colorful place, with “Cherry Pie” blaring from its speakers, and toothless, smoking old men bartending the place. As we sat there getting ready to go inside and find a spot upstairs, we saw two men walking from the club, one medium height, holding a guitar, while the other, tall, and slender, walked beside him chatting comfortably. Then I realized is Dan and Marty! As they threw the guitar in the back of their van and drove away, I thought "Crap, their leaving?" my mom also said " no way we drove almost 2 hours and Marty wouldn't just "chuck" his guitar in the car like that...
And I almost forget to mention the fact that "Shakers" should have had a designated driver bucket for keys for those of you ( and you know who you are ) Shakers is just a smaller two story bar, the show was upstairs, with a small stage, big enough for 2-3 people. With a bar on the outside wall, nothing fancy or special, your average bar, with pool tables, and a rickety old floor, when your not sure if its going to fall through or not.
My mom and I climbed upstairs and met some fellow hammerheads while waiting for the opening band to play.
David Carri, was always smiling and laughing, a great way to start the show. He sang for about an hour, and was really into the 80's hair band covers, like 'Every rose has its thorn' He was also taunted by Dan the heckler into singing Freebird, 86753099, and other strongly popular 80’s songs. But David’s originals were great as well.
While Marty and Dan got set up, (I guess they didn’t leave) David Carri went around and shook everyone’s hand, it was nice to meet him and tell him he had a great voice, and 80's covers weren’t the only thing he had to offer.

Marty Came one about 11:15, (my mom is sleeping by now, lol) and opened with Mr. Brightside, the song that started his acoustic career on Rockstar. He also told the crowd about his knee, back at The North Halsted Concert when he jumped down from the 3 story speaker box, he broke his knee on the landing? I was there, and I don’t remember seeing any pain in his eyes, or going anywhere afterwards it must have been a small bone?
Before Hold on, Marty told the crowd (about 60 people or less) his inspiration for the song. Marty's ex, moved from Chicago, to NY, and left her best friend behind, not to long after she moved, her friend committed suicide, Marty could recall the phone call. And how much it pained everyone. He wrote the song as an anti-suicide note to reach out o those who need it.
He continued with new songs such as ‘Just go’, and ‘hopes and fears collide’, both have great melodies, and lyrics, great acoustic song, but im not sure about Lovehammer tunes.
Marty loves audience communication, and participation, and took questions willingly. When asked how he begins to write a song, Marty said that each song is truly based on a memory good and bad. Every time he sings a song that has a bad memory attached to it, it automatically makes him think about it. 'But that’s not a bad thing, its like therapy, you think about it every time you sing that song. If you sing that song enough you eventually get over it"
With that he asked a volunteer to come up on stage and tell everyone what the song 'The Tunnel means to them.
A woman came onstage, but couldn’t seem to come up with a simple sentence to describe the song, she was eventually dismissed and we never got what The Tunnel means to her?
Ill tell you what it means to me. The tunnel is about waiting, in the first few lyrics the the story follows a person waiting on something, their holding back something. Their holding back for this person, this person is holding them back, while the person wants to move on and continue with their life, its about not waiting for that someone who is just going to hold you back.
Another great crown interaction moment, was when 'The birthday girl' Corey came up on stage. She was skinny blonde, and basically looked pretty sleazy in her fishnet stockings, but im not judging, lol. Marty asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she simply replied, 'That hat' gesturing toward Marty's black hat. "Nope" he said quickly. And she was helped off stage, (a little tipsy)
And Dale, the drunken heckler, he wouldn’t stop buying Marty shots, he bought him about 3 or 4, but he never got Marty to play freebird.
Creep was another hit with everyone, my moms favorite, which she kept sort of yelling under her breath. Marty must have heard her.
Then Marty broke out with baby one more time, and everyone got to sing along, sad we all know that song! Wish you were here was next, we all know that this song is great when Marty sings it, but it has an even deeper meaning to me personally, and I always tear up a little.
Near the end of the song, Marty sang Tree's and let everyone on stage to dance behind him, well at least all the tipsy people went up their and danced, lol. Marty also discussed with the crowd that he refers to himself as "we" which I do as well, it’s a split personality thing, lol.
All and all Marty is great acoustic, its strange seeing him sit and play his guitar, but I can say that I like it better. opposed to him climbing rafters, jumping into the crowd, running up and down the stage, and breaking his knee. But I do miss the mad conductor, we didn’t see any of that
I do love the lovehammers, but I would also support Marty if he went solo and did another single tour.
After the show, I got the pleasure of meeting Marty for a 3rd time. He is the nicest person you will ever meet ever. My mom was to shy to even go up and say hi, but she will do it next time. Any hammerhead knows what im talking about when I say that the first couple seconds when you meet Marty, even for the first time, its like you’ve known them forever, there’s that instant bond. But we all have that already because we are all bonded by the music.
But Marty defiantly recognized me, and asked how everything going, and how I was. And gave me a big hug. Lisa C. took some great pictures, since my mom couldn’t work my camera, "come on mom" Marty kept saying to her jokingly. My moms too shy. But we were taking pictures, and this other drunken guy buds in, as you can see, still have no idea who he is? But this lady wanted Marty to sign her CD, so I just stood by him and waited, (I had to give him one of my Teen bracelets,) But I gave him a bracelet, cause they rock and glow in the dark. He was immediately so thankful, "I left all mine back in Chicago, and can you put in on me?" I did and got another hug, Marty wouldn’t stop with the thank you's though, lol. But it’s nice to be appreciated so much. Then I got another hug, and Marty said "It was great meeting you again"
But the love didn’t stop there, once I got back to my mom, Lisa C (amazing photographer) and Jodi came up to me with hugs, I didn’t recognize them at all:( we will get to talk more at the next show! It was great meeting them! My mom brought a sharpie, and her card, but wouldn’t walk up there and get it signed? She regrets it now, lol.
All in all great night (didn’t get back till 3 am) I really don’t know who or where I would be today if it wasn’t for Marty, the Lovehammers, and My fellow Hammerheads, all you guys are really my 2nd family and I love you all very much.
Have a great Christmas, and to Marty: a couple fellow hammerheads and I have something up our sleeves to send you.
