Rock Star: A Night at the Mayan Theatre

SURE, INXS got a new front man out of the Rock Star series, but strip away the hype and what you have is American Idol all over again. Basically the appeal of this live recording is going to depend greatly on whether or not you are a fan of the show.
On its own, the record boasts some of the most well-known songs in the history of rock, and although it is able to provide an hour of nostalgia and familiarity, in most cases it falls woefully short of improving on such classics. While some contestants do a decent job interpreting such gems as The Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar, others falter badly.
That’s despite the fact that the songs were selected to showcase the vocal talents of the various contestants. Some do shine, though, like Jordis Unga who interprets The Who’s Baba O’Riley the way a gospel singer might, and eventual winner J.D. Fortune’s rocking performance of American Woman, and You Really Got Me by Marty Casey.
The premise of the show was to impress INXS within a song, and because of this, some renditions suffer from the contestants trying too hard. Dana Robbins’ soul take on Bob Dylan’s Knocking on Heaven’s Door is poor, while Mig Ayesa’s rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit is simply unforgivable.
I can’t say that I really got too excited over this.
