Idol Chartwatch, February 13: Slippin’ and Slidin’!
by Donna Reynolds -- 02/13/2006
This week, there were some new releases by heavy hitters in the music business. For the most part, this was not good news for our Idols. But one managed to remain in the top ten despite the competition. Read on to find out all of this week’s chart results.
The new releases keep on coming. This week, the top ten reflects the entry of new albums from Barry Manilow, Andrea Bocelli, and Heather Headley—heavy competition to be sure. As a result, Kelly’s Grammy winning album, Breakaway, fell off the top 20, landing at #24. But don’t despair. As a result of her spectacular win, sales for this album will spike next week, and I would expect it to jump back up into respectable position once again.
Despite the competition, Carrie Underwood’s Some Hearts hung in there on the Billboard 200 top 10, slipping down only one spot to #8. The album sold another 72,318 copies and is inching closer to the triple platinum mark. Some Hearts also moved back into the top spot on the Country Chart, pushing last week’s chart topper, Josh Turner, into second place.
And then there’s Bo Bice. The Real Thing dropped again, ending up at #93 on the Billboard 200, the only chart on which it appears. Rumor has it that the video for the single, “The Real Thing,” will be released this week. But his fans fear this may be too little, too late.
INXS’ Switch also fell victim to the onslaught of new releases, dropping to #98 on the Billboard 200. Interest in Marty Casey and Lovehammers seems to have waned. After a respectable entry into last week’s Billboard 200 (#67), the album dropped to #140 this week.
On the Country chart, Josh Gracin’s self-titled album dropped one spot to #53, while Nashville Star’s Miranda Lambert’s Kerosene rose one spot to #10. She also moved up on the Billboard 200 to #46.
On the Gospel chart, George Huff’s Miracles is down five spots, ending up at #37. Fantasia’s Free Yourself reentered the R&B chart at #81.
Idol-related compilation albums continue to do well, however. Here are this week’s standings:
The Gospel, which features Tamyra Gray’s “Now Behold The Lamb” continues to sell well, ending up at #113 on the Billboard 200, #37 on the Hot R&B chart, and #4 on the Gospel chart this week.
2006 Grammy Nominees, which features Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” dropped to #32 on the Billboard 200. It is #5 on the Top Compilation chart
Wow Gospel 2006, featuring George Huff’s “Brighter Day” soared to the top of the Gospel Chart, and entered the Billboard 200 at #20. It is #3 on the Top Compilation chart.
Now That’s What I Call Music #20 (Now 20) featuring Kelly Clarkson’s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” remained #29 on the Billboard 200 and #4 on the Top Compilation chart.
Carlos Santana’s All That I Am featuring Bo Bice’s “Brown Skin Girl” dropped again, this week ending up at #107 on the Billboard Top 200.
So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross featuring Fantasia’s “Til My Baby Comes Home” dropped six spots to #22 on the Top Compilation chart.
Idol-related singles continue to dominate the charts. Here’s how they did this week:
Kelly’s “Because of You” remained #16 on the Hot 100, and is up one spot to #9 on the Pop 100. It is #11 on the Hot 100 airplay chart, and #5 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. It’s #21 on Hot Digital Tracks, #38 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, and #4 on the Adult Top 40. The song is #5 on the Adult Contemporary Chart and #14 on Hot Dance Radio Airplay.
Kelly’s Grammy winning single, “Since U Been Gone,” is #46 on the Hot Digital Songs chart. Expect to see this song pop back up on the airplay charts in the wake of her stunning victory. “Gone” is #86 on the Pop 100 and #49 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. “Walk Away” rose again, up to #41 on the Billboard 200, #22 on the Pop 100, #32 on the Hot 100 Airplay, and #10 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart. It charted at #23 on the Adult Top 40, #48 on Hot Digital Tracks, and #61 on Hot Digital Songs
Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel” is down three spots to #26 on the Hot 100, but jumped up four spots to #47 on the Pop 100. The single is #1 on Hot Country singles, and up to #27 on Hot Digital Tracks, #31 on Hot Digital Songs, and #5 on the Hot Christian AC chart. The song is also #5 on the Hot Singles Songs/Tracks chart and #23 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart. “Some Hearts” rose two spots to #27 on the Adult Top 40.
Carrie’s first single, “Inside Your Heaven,” is #22 on the overall single sales chart, and #1 on the Country Sales chart. Bo’s version of “Inside Your Heaven/Vehicle” remained #13 on the Single Sales chart.
Fantasia’s collaboration with Lyfe Jennings, “Hypothetically,” moved up to #48 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop chart. INXS’ “Pretty Vegas” remained #8 on the Adult Top 40 chart.
Miranda Lambert’s single, “Kerosene,” is #17 on the Hot Country Chart, #66 on the Hot 100, #69 on the Hot 100 Airplay chart, and #83 on the Pop 100. George Huff’s, “A Brighter Day,” remains at #21 on the Hot Gospel Tracks chart.
Finally, if you were unfortunate enough to witness VH1’s fiasco In Search of the New Partridge Family a few years back, you might remember Teddy Geiger. He didn’t win the role of Danny on the show (which was supposed to result in a new version of the show but never materialized), but did catch the eye of producer Billy Mann, who has worked with Pink, Sting, the Simpson sisters, and Kelly Rowland. Teddy has released an album, Underage Thinking, and the first single from that album, “For You I Will (Confidence),” has made its debut in the Billboard 200 at #90.
There were no significant new releases last week, and nothing terribly exciting to report for this week, so the Idols will have a level playing field on which to compete. I expect that Barry Manilow will continue to top the chart for another week, and as I said before, Kelly’s Grammy win will move Breakaway back up again significantly. Carrie will also benefit from no new releases, and should move up again as well. What will happen to Bo? We’ll just have to wait and see.
