August 16, 2006 Reality fan base supports tours By David Lindquist david.lindquist@indystar.com
Winning isn't everything. Marty Casey, runner-up competitor on last summer's "INXS: Rockstar," and Miranda Lambert, who placed third on the 2003 edition of "Nashville Star," are doing fine. Though Casey and Lambert didn't take top prize in reality-TV talent searches, they're touring musicians with recording contracts. Casey and his band, the Lovehammers, will perform Friday at the Music Mill, 3720 E. 82nd St. Lambert will perform at 6:30 p.m. today on the WFMS Free Stage at the Indiana State Fair.
On Thursday, the "American Idols Live" tour will visit the fair. In addition to contest winner Taylor Hicks, three also-rans from "Idol's" fifth season have signed major-label contracts: Katharine McPhee, Chris Daughtry and Kellie Pickler. WFMS-FM (95.5) program director Bob Richards says TV shows can provide valuable momentum for unknown vocalists. "One of the biggest reasons someone would become a fan of an artist is that they see some kind of personal connection in the artist's personality," Richards says. "With a show like 'Idol' or 'Nashville Star,' that connection can be developed quickly."
