I've been trying to clean out the "junque" from my carport recently and discovered a 50 lb. bag of bird seed that I had forgotten about. The squirrels hadn't forgotten about it though - they'd been munching! I wanted it OUT of the garage, but didn't want to toss it in the trash bin. I inspected the seed and it was dry, clean and bug free, so I decided to toss it out at the base of the driveway for the birds, squirrels and geese to finish. Well, howdy doody. It's been sitting out there for about 10 days and I didn't realize that seed, when it gets wet, will ferment. Do you have ANY idea what fermenting seed smells like? It's like a dead, rotting water buffalo. And the critters won't touch it. The utter stench was disgusting. Yesterday I mustered up the courage to take the hose around back and hose it down to the end of the driveway and into the mulch. It took quite a while to move this blob of seed, but I got it done in about 20 minutes. The stench has finally moved on - we'll see what happens when we get another rain. I swear to g*d, that was the nastiest odor! Lesson learned: throw away seed or else don't let it get wet. Now that I don't smell water buffalo wafting into my carport it's funny. When I was covering my nose from the odor - not so funny. ;D ;D ;D
