Hey Marty Congrats on the new gig!! I am so excited for you.
I need some music industry advice.. My 15 yr old son who by the way is a huge black metal fan, (I do catch him on the sly listening to ultra sound and l'strange.) He writes the most amazing but very dark poetry. I have often told him that he could turn them into songs and be a song writer. well, a few local bands now want to use his poetry. how should he proceed.. does he need to protect his interests??. I know he thinks it is really cool. Any advice you can give would be great.
He is very excited about L.A. Guns, he has been listening to them for a while, funny how our musical interest have come together. He will be joining me for the Redding show. I am very excited, I will see you there. Thanks Jennifer

Get the lyrics copywritten. He can also open a free songwriter publishing account at BMI or ASCAP. You can do that online.
Also, the old-school way is to mail them (the poetry) to yourself and never open the package. Hold it on file. Then the Federal Government has dated and delivered the contents and that is proof of the date of the material.
Try tose. I am with BMI.
Tell him I am proud that he is being creative at such a young age. So cool that he likes black metal. What a great release for all the aggressions of youth. I loved Metallica when I was his age. My Mom actually liked some of their acoustic guitar work and I remeber listening to "The Call of Ktulu" together. We were both always intrigued by the minor chord changes.
