Everyone covered the event pretty well with their reviews, so I will just add some personal observations. This was my first Marty solo show, so I want to give a totally honest review......
IT WAS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than I even imagined it was going to be. Marty's voice is sounding the best I've ever heard. Singers need to sing on a regular basis, in addition to doing vocal training, warm-ups, etc., and it's clear that his voice has benefitted from all his hard work and many performances on tour this summer. He has new dimensions and nuances to his voice that are fascinating and beautiful. His voice is strong and vibrant across his entire range from lower to upper, and his ability to change dynamics, "from a whisper to a scream", is really exciting. He can make it smooth, or bring a bit of rock and roll grit as needed, and all in service to the emotion of the songs, which he expresses so deeply.
He was relaxed and in a great mood, and I'm sure he was touched by the great turnout for the meet and greet, as well as the show. It was a truly enjoyable day in a beautiful place, and all the people who bought necklaces were even doing good for the environment because of the trees that will be planted. A great combination!
Marty interacted in such a happy and playful manner with the crowd, both at the meet and greet, and during and after the show. It was fun to get to serenade him with the birthday song as he took the stage.
"Just Go" is such a powerful song. It was really moving to hear it live. Another notable moment came during "You Can't Always Get What You Want". During the verse about Mr. Jimmy, Marty did sing "Mr. Jimmy" for the first reference. But on the second reference, he sang "Mr. Tracii". Awwwww.....I think someone misses someone.....
We got to visit with quite a few friends we've gotten to know over the last few years, and it was wonderful to see everyone again.
And Marty's parents are so sweet! I was glad to get to say hello to them.
We had the best time hanging after the show with our special guest for the weekend--we have got to do this again, my friend!
Another neat thing was that a member of this board who I had never met before did a really kind and thoughtful thing for me that afternoon. That blew me away! You rock, my dear! Check your e-mail for important info.
We made a weekend of it in Chicago, and wrapped it up with watching the Navy (?) jets do their flyover of the Bears game on Sunday evening. Quite exciting to see them lighting up the evening sky with their afterburners, while they roared right past us!
I've got a lot of photos, and will get those ready tonight.
Oh yeah, the Zebra Lounge piano bar was......'interesting'! ;D
Little did I know that I would function as a cup holder that evening!!!! (You had to see it, I guess....)
Alas, we didn't make it to Jessica's show. I wish we could have been in 2 places at once.
A special note--On the way home, we listened to the CD of the studio recording of Trees that Marty did with Dave Navarro. This isn't what was played on the TV show. We have decided that this is the ultimate version of Trees. Navarro's solo takes a completely new approach, and Marty brought a lot of good stuff to the vocal. It's interesting that while you can hear how he's continued to develop his voice since then, you can tell on this CD that he was taking his first steps in that direction, and it sounds really good. Nicely done, Marty and Dave!
It makes the song sound fresh to my ears again.
Good times all around!
