We did it people! Change is on its way! Grant Park was just one joyful celebration, people crying, hugging each other after hearing Obama won! A historical night to remember, lots came with small babies sleeping on parent's shoulders...probably the generation to truly appreciate the new world order. Mayor Daley made this gathering possible by opening park to thousands of people. Behind the park you could see a beautiful skyline of the city with lit skyscrapers displaying patriotic signs. People were overwhelmed with joy and emotions America, change is on the way!!! Obama, Mr. President. www2.jpscotland.co.uk/slideshows/newsslideshows/chicago/

I have been proudly wearing my Obama 08 pin and using my Obama pen at work (thanks to my gorgeous DLTR ) I sat at work about 3.30 pm this afternoon (5th Nov) and logged into the Obama website to watch the live stream from Grant Park. I am so excited for the people of the United States. A young, vibrant President who is there for the people and open to change. FANTASTIC! I soon had a crowd around my desk watching with me (telling I wasn't allowed to stream live video at work) then my two bosses walked in and watched with me. I have followed the election process closely and I think the issues identified and addressed by Obama/Biden are totally relevant and do-able. It may seem a little strange for Australians to be so interested in who the American people elect as their President but believe that who you all choose as your leader affects us deeply and is felt not only here but worldwide. What a fantastic choice you all have made.

I echo what you're saying there Jet - we've all been watching very closely here in the UK too. Hopefully Obama can kick our Mr Brown in the ass and get him to DO something! Well done the USA - it was brilliant to watch all the crowds of people celebrating together.

Last night was truly transcendental.
This election means that our children can become anything they imagine.
His speech was poetic. It had me in tears.
I am truly proud of the people of my country for standing up and taking back our democracy. I am so proud of the college students across the country who stood up and said we will not be apathetic and jaded any longer and made a change. In short, I am once again proud to call myself American.

It was truly a momentous occasion for ALL Americans. Senator John McCain gave a gracious concession speech. The rally audience was respectful and applauded McCain for his service. President-Elect Barack Obama changed history and so did we. As always, he was eloquent and thoughtful in his acceptance speech. I will remember Election night Nov. 4, 2008 for the rest of my life. I hope that everyone is inspired. YES WE CAN do MORE for the good of our country and for the world (shout out to UK & Australia and all of our international friends).
(My first attempt to attach my video clip didn't work. I will try again when I get home tonight.)

What a fantastic choice you all have made.[/quote] That's awesome, Jet--thank you! Also Dawn and Iwo--well said! I am really sore from canvassing all day yesterday, and also on the last few days, but it was sooooo worth it! Yesterday, for the first time since 1964, the Democratic presidential candidate WON THE STATE OF INDIANA!!!!! He had the guts to come here and believe he could do it, and asked all of us to believe as well. In my memory, all the candidates just assume that Indiana will go Republican for the presidency. We never even had candidates' ads running here before this election, that I can remember. But Barack came to Indiana around 50 times, and let us know that we mattered, too. He asked for our vote, and asked for our best efforts to help him bring about the change we need. As I stood in the campaign office last night while the clock ticked down the final seconds before the polls closed here, I realized that all of us there were helping make history. I looked around at the whole scene and tried to fix it forever in my memory. Picture the scenes of campaign headquarters on the TV show West Wing, and it was like being in that scene, and being part of it. I've never experienced anything like this before. Someone who came down from Chicago to help with the campaign asked me if I thought that Barack really had a chance to win Indiana. I said, "Absolutely!" When he asked why, I said, "Indiana is hurting right now. Everywhere I go while I've been volunteering, people are eager to tell me why we need a new course for our nation. There is a feeling of excitement here now, because Barack had the courage, the will, and the wisdom to ask for the votes of EVERY citizen of this country, not just the "blue state" citizens. He is showing us all that each of us really does matter!" I'm so thankful to have gotten to help make this happen.

I tear up every time I hear or see a part of the speech from last or see the huge crowds around the world react to the news. I teared up when my daughter's best friend's mom told me her sister called her at 5:30 a.m. yesterday morning from Nigeria to remind her to vote. This means as much to the citizens of the world as it does to Americans.

The way we as a nation came together and showed our interest, energy, and enthusiasm was truly a beautiful thing.
John McCain delivered his concession speech with honor and class.
Barack Obama delivered his acceptance speech with eloquence and hope.
How exciting to be a part of this historical election.....and to be a part of a new beginning.

Blue - so well said. It is exciting to be part of this historic event and to look with hope to the future. I would have loved to be part of the celebration at Grant Park. It must have been amazing.

As a friend and neighbour to the north, let me just say how exhilarated I am about what happened last night!! I haven't ever been so captured by a human being in politics as I am with now President-Elect Barack Obama. We are in world-altering times and while I'm gravely concerned, I'm now encouraged to think with optimism and inspiration about the bigger picture and not just in my own little backyard. The tears flowed from me last night. Soooo amazing and moving. Seeing Jesse Jackson... seeing the faces, the crowds, feeling the goosebumps. I really don't have words... In June I picked up a copy of "The Audacity of Hope" because I had the need to know more about this man. It was an intelligent and soul-touching book. I'm now reading "An American Story: The Speeches of Barack Obama" - have been pouring through it for the last couple of weeks (I'm a slow reader). It's proof to me of this real transformation that will start happening very, very soon. I celebrate with you, my American friends!!!

What has really impressed me is how excited young people are. It did not stop with college students. At my son's high school, they organized Obama t-shirt days after every debate and and the day before the election and a big celebration lunch the day after. He is so excited he'll be able to vote for Obama in four years.
