True Palari.......and that is what you want to remember when you learn to sing........not to imitate someone else's voice.......but to develop your own........covers are great and many artists do them.........but you do need your own thang..........

And if you ARE learning to sing........and you emulate someone.....you run the risk of repeating the same mistakes or bad habits of that person.......(no....not you Marty.....)
Vocal excercises are BORING......but essential.......

OMG yes Stiletto. There are some great cover artists...and they are great because they take ownership of the songs...Joe Cocker for example.
Eva Cassidy sang Sting's "Fields of Gold" so well it probably makes him weep.
And do we need to talk about a certain rockstar covering a certain bubblegum pop song?

 Palari & Stil ... great post for examples of taking ownership with songs. I think it was TLee who told Lukas, when Luke sang the Billy Idol song RSSuperNova, the song was now his because it was in Lukes' style and it Rocked out  No Stil I don't believe the Guys will post everybody's song  just the winners....  ;D ;D ;D I give everyone Great Admiration who submitted

...you know perhaps the key to this is to not try and emulate Marty but to sing it in your own voice. I didn't have a choice...no way I can sing in Marty's voice...so I sang it palari style. Yeah its Marty's song... but when I sing it...its mine. ...not perfect...but mine Exactly, I just used my own voice, but I really dont think it was really very good, but it was fun and I know that I can carry a tune, but I did lose it in the pitching range a few times. Like Stilletto said, it was difficult to sing. last night while talking w/MC told him to VOTE FOR ME. LOL He said that he had not even heard my version is all I can say.... |

I found it so difficult. I took the laptop into the bathroom, closed the doors so no one could hear and then closed my eyes so I couldn't see myself in the mirror. My daughter informs me I sound British when I sing. Well, marty sounded British when he sang Take Me Out, but that's pretty much the only way I have emulated him!

I went across town to a friend's place. I don't have the software to do it at home. He was really sweet. He greeted me at the door in the jedi robes he had made himself (ok with some help from his mum.) They looked pretty good too...if you like that sort of thing.
I sat down at his desk, put on the headset, sang the thing saved the file to a flash drive and cycled home again.
Then I sent it away. Its funny but...as soon as I hit send I thought to myself...oh no...what have I done? There is no unsend button.
So I am in, for better or worse.

gingin...I have not posted mine. I think there is a thread at lovehammers.com where you can hear some of them.
You need to go to yousendit.com and create an account there. Then you can upload your file and send the link in to Dan at Lovehammers.
Does that help?

 Stil, that means u and I are going to sound check, baby! OMG Terrific!!!!! They all sound great.........everyone did an awesome job!! I'd be interested in knowing what software everyone used to do their recording.........they all sound so clear.........I think I could have used something else.........lol |

I was wondering.......was this just for entrants? I thought I read that if you placed you and a guest would be allowed bakstage?
The whole point of me doing this was to get my girlgonewild into the sound check...........
Perhaps I was mistaken?
Can someone clarify??

I'll be there, too!!! Yeah!!!! Don't know about bringing a guest (or having a replacement go as some folks are mentioning at LH.com) -- probably would have to ask Dan Rachel (HammerMistress at LH.com) suggested Audacity (was a free download) - so that is what I used - pretty easy and has some cool features if you want to jazz things up - though I just recorded mine straight, then adjusted the "gain" so the music didn't drown me out. I entered, did not place, but I'm going to soundcheck, so who cares - as long as the guys can't put a name with a face, I'm good. Like Palari said, when I hit the send button, I thought crap, MARTY is going to hear this! Oh well!
