I couldn't choose one. A good song to me is the synergy of the melody, the harmonies, the beat, the lyrics and the arrangement. They all should knit together to create a wonderful whole.

Guess the show did a survey and discovered there was one part of the song that was more important to this group of people. You couldn't pick just one and that's fair enough... I agree with you it is difficult pick ONE part! This to me is like asking us to pick out my Fav song of MCLH CD Yet, we might see some discussion of likes and dislikes of different styles of music and how the three parts play separable with the style of preferences.

It was hard to pick one, but I chose the beat, because a song could have the most amazing lyrics, but if I didn't like the beat to begin with, I probably would never have listened to the song in the first place.

I'd have to say lyrics first, then beat, then riffs. Why? Because lyrics have a "beat" all there own when you speak them, sing them. The beat just reconfirms the vocals, giving them measure and a hard timing. Riffs flesh out the song and gives it that finalizing fullness.
'Course, this is just my opinion, so yeah.

How can you pick just one part? To me, it is the entire conglomeration. I guess I would pick the beat if I had to because without a beat, a song would just be poetry.

I guess I would go with rhythm - not necessarily the beat, but the timing. A good song depends on the timing - how long to keep a particular rhythm going, knowing when it needs to change, knowing what lyrics are important and what can be left out because it is just a space filler and knowing when the song needs to end.
I like a song that has forward momentum, not to say that it has to be fast and aggressive, but movement is key.

I have to say beat...if the beat speaks to me, I don't care what the words are.

hmm, i kinda the opposite, taxegirl. In fact, was just listening to a new tune the other day (NOT Hammers) and I was thinking, not bad. Until the singer started and the words were total C-rap. I am so sensitive to lyrics that some words actually cause me physical pain. Like when anyone sings, "between you and I". Makes me actually hurt.

Lyrics - with the voice of Marty! Sometimes in a whisper, sometimes in a scream and sometimes in between!
