Was anyone at the taping where Marty sang "Creep"? During his performance, they did not show INXS at all, not even once. I was wondering what they were doing while he was actually performing.
They gave him some good comments afterward, but it says a lot to see their faces during a performance.
In fact, of the other rockers, they only showed JD, and only once during Marty's performance. The rest of the time, it was all Marty, the band, and the crowd, like it was a real rock concert. Maybe they saw how awesome it was going to be during the rehearsal, and decided to make the actual performance recording as true to being a concert as possible.
It was just so amazing!

Sorry, BBE, not me. But I'd like to know too. In fact, I'd love to have been a fly on the wall during the show meetings and editing sessions. Oh, the manipulations that must have gone on! (More than even those of us with overactive imaginations have probably imagined.) And I'll never forget your report (on the RS/MSN board) about the taping you went to ... especially how you said Marty's voice is so much more powerful than the broadcasts made it out to be. Case in point! So, come on, folks — who out there saw Marty's live performance of "Creep"??

i wasn't there, but i noticed on the broadcast that GB really started off by complimenting JD after Marty sang Creep -- mentioning how he loved hearing songs by Pink Floyd. When he added"and Radiohead, one of our favourite bands" it seemed like he suddenly remembered he had to say something to Marty. I hope the DVD shows more reaction to all the performances, crowd, INXS, etc. The edited version we saw leaves me wondering...

I wasn't sure if he was referring to Wish You Were Here or JD. It sorta pissed me off to think he was referring to JD, so I decided to think they said Pink Floyd because of WYWH.
The other thing I noticed is that Tim had his arms crossed while Marty was talking in between his songs. I mentioned this to my sis-in-law and she told me that I was reading too much into it, but I read a lot of body language and I didn't like it.
It's okay, Better Off Walk Away!

I don't think he meant "and Radiohead" as an afterthought, IMO. When he thanked Marty, I took him to be genuine. I may be wrong, but that's just my take. If he did have any other thought, it might be because Marty came out of that peformance with a coy smile. Such a powerful performance (probably the most of the series) and he just hops on down off the stage. He said, "Thanks Dave, that was awesome" (for playing on Trees), just matter-of-factly. He knew he nailed the performance. It was interesting to see the cutaway to JD. He was really getting in to it. I think his face mirrored that of most of the audience AND OB & Dave. It was truly riveting. It's not the kind of peformance that somebody could be sitting there thinking about their dentist appointment tomorrow, LOL! Gee, can you tell Creep is my fave? I would have given anything to have been there!

Good topic! I am glad they didn't cutaway to INXS during this song, the more Marty I see the better and his performance was so intense it still gives me goosebumps every time I watch it. I think INXS were extremely happy with this Marty performance and mrsbud is right. Marty really nailed this performance. Creep is one of the best Marty performances in my mind, just love it!! Rock on Marty

I think that when Marty smiled after he finished singing "Creep", it was because 'off-stage Marty' knew that 'performer Marty' had just nailed that song, and he was delighted. If you have a recording of that show, watch how 'off-stage Marty' transforms right before your eyes into 'performer Marty'. He finishes talking between the songs, then goes to the mike. He lowers his head, and when he raises it again and looks into the camera, 'performer Marty' is there, in all his intensity! Whoa!!! Then at the end of the song, he lowers his head again. When he raises it again, 'off-stage Marty', the nice regular guy, is back! It just blows my mind to see this happen. I recall someone who had been to that taping saying that they cut out a lot of the comments afterward, so Dave probably said something else to him before he said that to Dave. This person also reported that Kirk said that despite the lyrics, "you DO belong here!" Notice how that got cut out?

EXCELLENT observation BBE I find myself absolutely fascinated by that transformation from regular nice guy into Superhero. I don't know how he does it, but boy does it impress me. It says a lot about his character that he can summon up that kind of control and intense focus in order to do that. It just makes you want to know more about him - because you suspect that what he shows you as a regular guy is NOT all there is to him . . . that he's got some fires burning below the surface . . . and when he's performing he lets you get a peek at them . . .

Rock on Marty You are so right. You could tell that GB appreciates good music and a good performance. Just from the comments from the final show you could tell that they all really did appreciate Marty's talent and stage presence... such as "Riveting" and "You transform". Creep was all of that and more. I wish we could have heard the unedited comments.

Then he comes off a performance, especially one that intense, and just snaps into "off-stage Marty" as you call him. It blows me away. I said it before, what a true performer!

I think that as Marty started getting SO strong and good at the end, they had to tone down things because they knew J. D. was going to win. Marty had so much momentum that they had to swing away from some of it. I love "Creep" also and can't believe he can just be Marty again so easily, but I think he has memories of hurting times that he can draw from. I also heard the original "WYWH" on the radio today and couldn't listen to it. It wasn't half as good as Marty!

At that point, I knew that INXS would pick JD. It was all in their body language. They would show Tim crossing his arms with a scowl on his face during Marty's performances and then show Tim really getting into Pretty Vegas and singing along with it.
Actually.. I knew that JD had the job as soon as he sang Mystify on one of the elimation shows. He was a dead ringer for MH. Elvis impersonator to MH impersonator.

To answer this, I know that back over on Television without Pity there were folks from there who went regularly and they always posted remarks that described the reactions of audience and band. So I bet if we went back over to TWoP and searched for the spoilers from the attendees for that night, we could find out what the band's response was during Marty's performances that week.
Maybe I can go back and look around a bit. I do know the performance shows were taped on the Sunday afternoon/early evening before the Tuesday show each week...so that means the Trees Acoustic/Creep performance would have been discussed in the spoilers on Sept. 11th.
Maybe I can go over to that board and find the posts around that time and see if there is any info on it.

I agree with everyone else about how Marty can just get into the "character" of the song ... this was true for Lithium, I Alone, Mr. Brightside (his version has much more power than The Killers' does) and certainly Creep. Someone over at the rockstar fashion site said Marty is a shapeshifter. I think that's part of what makes him a real artist.
I'm glad they didn't cut away to OBINXS during Creep. The performance was so intense that I would have been distracted by seeing the band's reaction. I also wonder if Mark Burnett figured out some time during the season that Marty looks really great on camera. The closer, the better!
And I think, or hope, GB's comment about Pink Floyd goes back to when Marty did WYWH ... GB actually got teary-eyed during the encore of that song.

Yeah, but both of them are big big JD fans...so I would rather find some one who was paying attention to Marty and all to get a second opinion.

I'm a Mod over at Rockband. Cheryl, the board owner, is a Marty fan. ;D
She went to two shows and posted spoiler info on one. The other show she attended was the finale. She took her cell with her and phoned me as soon as the taping was over. I posted the spoiler info for her as she drove back to San Diego. Obviously, I knew the outcome, but couldn't spill the beans. I was devastated, but soon realized that Marty was the true winner!
