After hearing that the DVD wasn't so good, of course I had to rent it and see.
I'm struck by the following after watching it... 1. I forgot how talented everyone was 2. I forgot how much Suzie McNeil kicked ass on Bo Rap 3. I forgot how ridiculous Mig really was (although very talented) 4. I forgot how often JD looked with FEAR in his eyes when Marty sang 5. I forgot that no matter how many times I hear or see Marty sing "Wish You Were Here" it brings tears to my eyes... the stars aligned that night, I think.
So if you want to remember all that, rent or buy the DVD.

and if u want to see/hear why marty should have won (I mean really should have won) then watch the mini INXS concert. JD shares the mic with the other rockers during Never Tear Us Apart and Marty sings one line. And it sounds ASTONISHINGLY GOOD. I would have stayed thru the whole INXS set if that voice was connected to the music!

Andrew commented during the studio clinic, where they asked Marty to sing in the "feminine voice", that he was impressed with the beautiful sound that came out. Marty can do anything, can sing in a variety of voices, and can evoke all kinds of moods. He is making the artistic choices that work for him. Fortunately, they work for me, too!

pdhva -- Thanks for starting this thread and for your 5 terrific points. I miss talking about the good old RS:INXS days. Your summary of MiG totally on the money: ridiculous and talented both.
And, brennak, I too have had the DVD for months and have been unable to watch the JD/INXS concert section. Even though things have worked out for MC, I felt he was robbed that night and have avoided reliving those moments. I will try to buck up and watch.

When I watched the mini-concert (could only watch it once) I was struck by the fact that JD couldn't hit the notes at the end of Don't Change. Was he able to in concert? The fear in JD's eyes was there every time Marty took the stage. I have to chuckle whenever I watch the videos and they cut to JD. He always looks so pained. I think he knows Marty should have won because he has the better voice. However, INXS didn't want to change so that is why JD was picked.

Yes, they did cut to JD a lot and I always thought he looked worried, too. He actually has the better voice, in terms of the "instrument" itself. Suzie had the best pure voice of the bunch. But Marty is the best MUSICIAN, the best ARTIST, the best ROCKER. JD just doesn't rock for me, but then neither does INXS. I really think of them as a pop band. Marty had to hold himself back when singing "Don't Change" with them.
