A trademark dispute over the name of the band created by the reality TV series Rock Star: Supernova has been settled.

A judge had ordered the band to choose a new name and the new band didn't stray far to find one.

From now on, the band fronted by Toronto singer Lukas Rossi will be known as Rock Star Supernova.

Rossi won the contest to be lead singer in a band consisting of drummer Tommy Lee, bassist Jason Newsted and guitarist Gilby Clarke.

The newly created band was to be called Supernova, but it turned out an existing group called Supernova was created in Orange County, Calif., in the 1990s.

The group, which has four albums, sued Mark Burnett, creator of the Rock Star reality TV series, for trademark infringement.

A judge issued an injunction on Sept. 12 preventing the new band from using the name.

He ordered the band to pick a new name and the new name they come up with was Rock Star Supernova.

Rock Star Supernova is already in the studio working on its debut album, due Nov. 21. Its first tour kicks off Dec. 31 in Las Vegas, with two Canadian dates so far.

I saw this earlier today. I was thinking that if Lukas were smart he wouldn't sign anything until it was all settled so as not to be liable! He could do the ol' "Who me? Superwhatta?"

SETTLEMENT TO SEE SUPERNOVAS SHARE

There's enough Supernova for everyone. At least under a settlement reached by a California punk band called Supernova and the CBS reality show "Rock Star: Supernova." Under the deal announced yesterday, the punk band will keep its original name and the TV band will be known as "Rock Star Supernova." The original Supernova sued CBS, the show's participants and Mark Burnett Productions in June, claiming unfair competition and trademark infringement. "Rock Star: Supernova" followed 15 contestants who aspired to become lead singer of a new rock band that includes former Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke and former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. The winner was Lukas Rossi of Toronto

Were they on a short timeline to get a new name? It seems like they could have came up with something more original than that. Sheesh.

I'd guess they want to retain as much of a connection to the TV show in the fans' minds as possible. From that standpoint, the name is pretty smart.
