I think I must have missed something....I've heard several mentions of something to do with Kool-Aid...But I have no idea why???
Did it have something to do with something from Rockstar INXS? The first week I watched was when Marty sang "Mr. Brightside".
If anyone can clue me in, I'd greatly appreciate it.
P.S. My ten year old just said to me..."you're on there again....you're way to obsessed with him!!" LOL

I've just finished a bio on Marty for the MC.org site. I addressed the "Kool-Aid Commune" in my bio because it's such a huge following. Here's what I said: In the eyes of his fans, the whirlwind of Marty’s Rock Star: INXS performances reached hurricane intensity when he sang “I, Alone,” in week seven of the competition.
I sank into Eden with you Alone in the church by and by I'll read to you here, save your eyes You'll need them, your boat is at sea Your anchor is up, you've been swept away And the greatest of teachers won't hesitate To leave you there, by yourself, chained to fate I alone love you I alone tempt you I alone love you Fear is not the end of this!
Sartorially relevant down to his bare feet and black painted toenails, Marty’s rendition of this song about a cult leader inspired online fans to christen themselves the “Kool-Aid Commune.” Those gathering weekly in Chicago to watch Rock Star: INXS recognized one another by the packets of Kool-Aid pinned to their shirts. Monica, a fan posting in response to Marty’s blog, wrote, “You must know that you have already won, because your fans will follow you wherever you go.”Watch the MC.org website for Marty's bio tonight or tomorrow.

Amy,
Thanks for the total insight on that. I know that it came from fans saying they'd follow Marty like a cult leader, etc., but I never knew it came from "I Alone".

Isn't that a CREEEEEPY reference to the Jim Jones cult and the massacre of his converts? I don't think Marty would like to be associated with that...

The reasoning of relevance: loyal fans found the "I, Alone" performance to be one of Marty's most riveting - yet INXS had negative comments for him. We, as fans of that performance, did not agree with the negative comments and found the song's meaning relevant to our feelings toward Marty - we will follow you no matter what others think or say. It's not at all a creepy reference. The reference is simple, relevant, and complimentary to the loyalty of Marty's fans.

Isn't that a CREEEEEPY reference to the Jim Jones cult and the massacre of his converts? I don't think Marty would like to be associated with that... Yes it is referenced from there. However, the focus is not suicide but the adoration of the fans. Creepy? Kind of but I would use the word dark. That works for me with regard to Marty. We love sweet, sensitive Marty but we are hot for the powerful, scary, oh so frickin' sexy Rock God Marty. For me, Koolaid represents the edgy, dark feelings that come with loving him. I am an intelligent, creative, interesting woman with a great job, a beautiful family and a full life but I can't think about anything but Marty Casey. He has infected my psyche. His intensity, passion and drive, his long lean body, and blow-your-mind performances...the songs that he sings are constantly playing through my head, I ache, I can't eat, I can't sleep...okay so I'm a mess but you get my point. So, Koolaid it is. Creepy? No. Serious, dark and edgy? Yes, yes, yes.

As mentioned in previous posts, please do not take the Kool-aid reference in bad taste. Really, Kool-aid is very sweet, depending on how you make it. It can be quite refreshing.
Months back on the TWoP threads (where many of the intrepid spoilers originated), there was much snark about each rocker. Snark is gentle sarcasm and funny opinions about each contestant, not each poster. At some point, the fellow posters started assigning beverages to each rocker. Think of it as creative brainstorming with humor. JD was assigned EverClear...a hard straight knock you off your socks drink. Bad boy image. Suzie was assigned apple Cider and it became Hard apple cider as she started kicking some major butt. MiG was assigned Milk and Cookies because he was just so sweet and wholesome and you could just eat him up. Jordis was Diet Coke with Lime. Marty got the Kool-Aid reference cemented to him when he did the I, Alone cult performance (which was just phenomenal art BTW) and from our recognition that TPTB were using camera work, etc to "hook" us onto Marty's allure. How could one look into those eyes and not follow him anywhere? The other non-Marty fans got tired of hearing so much fangirly squeee so they snarked on Kool-Aid....and we welcomed it "with arms wide open!!!" To give the snark back.
It is an exercise in fun, imaginary fangirly freedom for many of us that are are well past our fangirly stage in life. Yes, we should know better...but we are obsessed women...as are all of you.
Let us all support each other in this "treasure" we have discovered!!
XSivelyHammered Another Proud Member of the Kool-Aid Commune and Hammerhead too!

Yes, those eyes ... it was "I, Alone" that got me, too. I immediately downloaded the entire Live album from iTunes because of that song. But from that point on, I was hooked on Marty Casey. What became really obvious, from week to week, is that he can do anything! I'm well past my 20's but am totally obsessed. Can't wait to see him in concert.

Further clarification for the origin of Kool-Aid. This is a thread that from last week. I posted it earlier today, but went back & deleted it. After a tall, cool glass of Kool-Aid this afternoon I’ve decided to re-post.
Ladies from the Kool-Aid Commune, please feel free to comment.

Their drinks suit them perfectly, ha. Why was Jordis Diet Coke with Lime? Sweet with a little kick?

And it so sums me up! I don't want to put down other places, but I've run into some places and the talk isn't about Marty's talents, it's all girly.. 'oooh', and that annoys me when most of the forum/group/list, etc., is about "what a hottie". I think the comments have their place, but I like more balance.
I'm loving this forum more and more every day. I love the mix of all types of coverage.
Oh, and yes, I am very obsessed when I play only Marty or Loverhammers music ever day, and think about him and sigh over photos.
*edit to express things better.

Well said, beantown (and others). I really have nothing to add, except we of the Koolaid Commune have nothing but love and respect (and squeee) for Marty and his awsome talent. This is all done in the spirit of fun and snark and hopefully no one takes the koolaid reference negatively as it was not meant that way. That said, if it really bothers you, can we respectfully agree to disagree (YMMV)?

Well said, Amy, palari, xsivelyhammered, beantown and del901.
The Kool-Aid thing is also self-deprecating, imho. As grownups, with full lives before, during and after all this, most of us are pretty stunned to find ourselves so focused on a new band/singer. We realize it's all a bit silly, a bit crazed, but our (dark) senses of humour are intact and we're having fun with it.
Many of us have had our interest in playing music and going out to live shows sparked and renewed. Some commune members have picked up the guitars, drums and mikes they dropped years ago and are once again expressing themselves musically. We're supporting each other not only by passing on info on where to see and hear Marty and LH, but by encouraging one another's self-expression and other talents. Marty is what drew many of us together in the first place, but out of that has also come much hilarious and insightful writing, visual art and music.
So, yeah, it's about Marty, it's about the fan thing, it's about the craziness we acknowledge in ourselves, but it's also about the communities we've formed, both online and off.
Yet another proud member of the Kool-Aid Commune and, yup, Hammerhead.
