Well, folks, you never know what is going to happen in the Big Apple ...
Gineen, her husband Ken, his friend John and I went over to the Mercury Lounge last night to see Neal sing with a band called Mouth to Mouth (for those of you who were here for the CBGB's show, the club is right down the street from the HoJo's). I knew Marty was in the city, and he and Neal have remained friends, so I decided to take my camera ...
... and ...
... HE SHOWED UP!!!
The club is small like CBGB's (although much newer, and it has a great sound system). We were hanging out, listening to the first band, and in walked this slender blonde man. I wasn't sure at first if it was him, but then I saw the signature All Stars, and I knew.
I don't normally go up to well-known people when I see them because I feel like they are entitled to their private time, but I decided I might never get this chance again, so I broke my rule. I went up, shook his hand (he has a nice, open handshake), told him he was "da bomb" (not sure if he'd heard that expression before) and welcomed him to NY. He thanked me and I walked away.
Ken is very outgoing and also went up to him and asked him to join us. He said he would come over after Neal's set (which was great, by the way ... Neal is also a real rocker). And he did! So I grabbed my camera and took a few shots (I also have a few shots of him talking with Neal). I'll put them up later tonight.
He is exactly as he has been described before, very gracious and thoughtful. To make himself so available when he is not in a LH setting is remarkable. I thanked him for being so generous, he said "no problem" or "not at all" or something like that (really, it was so surreal that I still can't believe it happened). I also told him that I am one of the people who has gotten back into rock and roll because of him.
Most of the people there apparently either didn't recognize him or just don't know who he is (yet) ... it's been my experience that lots of people don't expect to someone "in the flesh" so they don't recognize them when they actually see them. And Marty is understated in the way he presents himself, which is one of the many things I really like about him.
Ken kept on saying over and over again that Marty is "the real deal." Amen to that, brother!
