Just for Key-the parts that go between IV and V. Hope this fleshes the story out a little more.
“Do we really have to do this?” Adelle groaned, watching Kade flip through the catalogue of flatware and place settings.
“Yes, we really do. My family won’t forgive me for not making a registry.”
Adelle groaned again, staring at the ceiling. “This is stupid. Any and all dishes we get will be broken within a month, anyway.”
“I’m not that clumsy.”
“Need I remind you of that time you tripped and somehow broke five drinking glasses, two plates and a cookie jar? Can’t we just ask for durable plastic plates and cups?”
“Oh, that’s high class. Do you like this one?” He held the catalogue out, but Adelle continued to stare at the ceiling.
“Just pick out the most expensive, plainest pieces so we can get out of here. I want to watch a movie and go to Pike’s Place.”
“What don’t you like about doing this?” Kade was no longer staring at place settings, but watching her.
“I don’t understand why we have to have a huge wedding. Its such a waste-all that crepe, the flowers, the dress, the tuxes…can’t we just elope? Get married in the courthouse? Its not like we’re not already living together with a joint bank account, own a car together and buy everything together. We’re already halfway married as is, just not legally.”
Kade stretched over and kissed her warmly on the cheek. “I know, it’s a pain. But please…my mom will never forgive me if we don’t do this.” She looked at him, and his eyes glinted mischievously as he went back to the folder.
“What?” She pushed over to sit closer to him.
“Nothing!” His grin grew in spite of himself.
“Kadey…”
“Nope, nothing.”
“Fine then.” Adelle leaned over his shoulder, watching him flip through the pictures. They were silent for several moments when suddenly Kade yelped, leaping off the couch, balancing the book on his palms.
“You pinched me!” He scowled and rubbed his side petulantly. Adelle giggled, then poked out her tongue when he frowned. Kade dropped the book to the floor and came at her, grinning. Adelle squealed and slapped at his hands until Kade’s foot bumped the table in front of them, and she reached over, catching a falling vase one-handed. Kade stopped and watched her. “Oops.”
“You clumsy.” She gently placed it back onto the table, glaring back at the disapproving sales clerk walking by.
“Okay, okay. Truce, but only if you promise not to pinch me again.”
“Are you going to tell me what you were grinning about, then?”
“You know, Mom loves it that you don’t care about the wedding. She’s been trying to tell me it means you don’t care about me.”
“Yet another reason your mother is kind of out of her mind.”
Kade gave her a warning look half-seriously before continuing. “You know, it would drive her nuts if you decided to become a little dictator about the whole affair. She’d be beside herself if you were suddenly making all the decisions, not her.”
Adelle considered it as Kade picked the book off the floor, then threw her arms around his shoulders. “Okay, no more pinching or goosing of any sort for the rest of the day. Promise.”
Kade leaned back into her, kissing her cheek. “Do you like this one?”
“Its pretty.” She considered it. “How do you feel about baby blue and light gray for the colors for the wedding?”
“Mom hates any shade of gray.”
“I know.”

Rick lay back on the bed, watching the technician set up the equipment. “I see your pretty fiancée isn’t here this time.” Rick opened his mouth to object, but the other continued. “You’re one lucky man, to have a girl so devoted to you. A lot of women would have walked out on a guy in your position, being sick and all. My ex-wife left me just because I decided to go back to school and get a better job. If only she had been devoted to…what’s your girl’s name?”
“Adelle, but she’s not my fiancée.”
“She isn’t? Then what’s the ring she wears?”
“She’s engaged to a man named Kade. We’re just friends.”
“Some other guy’s girl comes in here and takes care of you? Man, what kind of relationship do they have, I wonder.” The man snickered to himself. “She must some sort of real ringer, if her man lets her spend so much time with another guy. If it were me, I’d be walking out on the broad.” The tech shook his head. I think any woman that spends so much time away from her man must not really love him.”
“No, Adelle loves him very much. They’re very happy together.”
“Then why would she spend so much time with you? She’s always all over you when she’s here.”
Rick struggled to sit up, but the nurse setting up his IV pressed him firmly back down. “You can’t get up until after this procedure, Mr. Leod.”
Rick scowled, but smiled when he spotted Adelle in the observation window, arguing with the doctor, gesturing with her arms. She spied him watching he and waved, then stomped her foot and pointed at the doctor as he walked into Rick’s room and frowned. The doctor stood at the foot of the bed, looking over something on his clipboard. “Can’t she come in?” Rick gestured at the window.
“I’m afraid not.”
“Please, just right before it starts. I want to say hello to her.”
“Absolutely not. Your immune system is down right now, and you are in danger of getting an infection during your surgery. We can’t let her in right before the operation.”
Rick slumped back, looking defeated. Adelle pouted from the window, and Rick smiled back, shaking his head slightly. The other frowned, then waved back, mouthed See you later, blew him a kiss and walked away.

Fly, Wow - I loved it!! Touching and funny. Dialogue flows. The story is light with a nice balance of narrative and dialogue. The characters are vivid and compelling without heavy description. I'm a big fan of good dialogue and 'less-is-more'. I'd love to see this in a short story collection. Go for it!!

Fly this was so goooood, I loved it. It pulled me in right away and I was hooked! All the way till the end where I was fighting the tears back and have a lump in my throat now(thank you). I tell ya I feel so envious to be in the same threads reading the works of Grumpy Pirate , Cheza , You and Star! I'm in the presence of greatness :-) More Please!! The characters are very real to me and I can picture them all in my head, and all of us who ever loved anyone can put ourselves in Adelle shoes. I don't know what I would do if an Ex called me and wanted me to be with him when he died??!! Intense stuff. You have quite the romantic streak in ya!!
