Have you heard of The Tragically Hip? (my fave Canadian band - being a Canadian and all). Their lead singer, Gord Downie, is an astounding entertainer, poet and all around troubadour - much like you are.

They are from Kingston, Ontario - right near where I live - and they are starting to get some recognition in the U.S. (after performing for like 20 years up here).

I think you would have the most amazing connection with Gord D.

I've seen them live and heard their records. They are well respected here in the states and regularily sell out shows in the midwest. They aren't such a best kept secret here anymore. They are very jam oriented and fun to see live.
