*hehe* I know what you mean...sometimes it seems a writer's work is never finished...I've been working on a play for eight or so years now...15 drafts in...and it's still not quite right. Which I had someone tell me it wasn't long enough for a two-act right now...and it has to be...at least in my mind. I can't picture it as a one-act, but it has some historical elements in it and that's making it a lot of work. Next time I'm sticking to the voices and images in my head...the figments of my imagination. You've sparked my interest. What's it about? It's about a family who has been greatly affected by wars over several generations. I almost choked when I read your bit about the Christmas tree angel - there's something similar in my piece - the baby sister in the family doesn't want the angel put on the tree because her brother always does that (this is near Christmas after he's been drafted and sent to Vietnam). It's chocked full of flashbacks and then veers back to the present day...that's part of what makes it so cumbersome. Long story short, Suzanna, the baby of the family is anti-war, Bohemian/hippie, liberal, and the dad, Ambrose, is a dyed-in-the-wool patriot - a WW vet who believes in fighting to protect freedom and serving your country. I had set it aside a long time ago - started writing it in 97 or 98...probably 98...but after Sept. 11 happened I had to go back to it. It "called" me. It just so happened that Suzanna, from the first draft on, has always been an opinion columnist for the New York Times and lives in NYC. Oddly enough, that was a consistent thing along with the fact she has a child...in some drafts she married the kid's dad, in some she didn't, in some she's a raging addict, in some she's not...it's very strange the course this one is taking. The bulk of the action takes place when she goes to her parents' house for Christmas...sans a key person or two in her life...and she's pretty bitter about feeling she is required to go there and knows she will only get into a fight with her dad. As for the present day, I think it will be Christmas 2001. Otherwise, with the state of things in Iraq, it could go on into infinity.

Hi Cheza -- (did you see in the Asylum Fan Girl thread where we share a fondness for the play Rent??? not to mention an interest in theater - I've been involved in community theater for several years now) Yes, yes, YES! I majored in Speech/Theatre Ed I love RENT! Funny story about that actually, the guy who was playing Roger in the production I saw in LR (his name is Kevin Spencer...he has a website...I think it's Kevinspencer.net) was VERY attractive, and based on Adam Pascal's performance in the film (even though I love Adam dearly) - he was a BETTER Roger...he bawled during "Your Eyes" and the whole audience bawled with him... Anywho, while I was on my way to the show, my car broke down. I had to leave it in a parking lot and catch a cab to the matinee. My mom was not happy with me for that, but I was not missing the show. I had been trying to see it for YEARS and I finally was in the same town as it and there was no way in heck I wasn't going. So, long story short...Saturday...in the city...show gets out between 4:30 and 5...I go to the police station down the road from the theatre seeking assistance...they say they don't know any mechanics that are open...*sigh*...so they offer to take me back to the car to get my stuff and then take me to a hotel for the night. I say okay, we go get my stuff out of my car, and they give me an option of two places...the place with the Pineapple in its logo and a Best Western. I choose the Best Western. Well, guess who else is staying at the Best Western? The CAST OF RENT. I got to meet Kevin that night in the lobby and he was a sweetie, got his autograph, and proceeded to go all stupid #doh# Anyways, that made my night. The next day I paid to have the car towed back to North Little Rock and fixed at Pep Boys...there was no way I would have gotten home otherwise...the alternator had locked up and ripped my drive belt (in other words, what runs the whole blasted motor) into shreds because the other pulleys kept turning! It was worth every penny for that adventure! What roles have you played? I can give you a litany!

Night Rachael.
Your play sounds interesting Cheza. When ya finish it, let me know. I'd love to read it. I've been thinking about writing a story that's set during a war. I was inspired by The Notebook.
