Good grief, RJ! BTW loving the puppet in the empire thread! Hi Cheza! I'm in a silly mood again. I just popped back in for a few. How are things? Things are going pretty well, RJ. AMAZINGLY, it seems I actually have a large percentage of students who WANT to LEARN this year! Can you imagine? The smaller percentage wants to sleep and hates school. The only real troublemakers thus far are the repeaters...I feel like saying - you are in this class for the third or fourth time and you're judging me. One today said "Are we going to be waiting four or five months for our papers like last year?" and I informed the class that 1. The ONLY thing they waited a long time to get back was their research papers...which he did not do...and everything else was back within a WEEK. and 2. Then I told him that this is a new year and if he had not been able to tell yet due to my new rules and demeanor that last year is gone and this one is a new ballgame. That one is on his fourth attempt to pass this class. This is his second year with me and he had the prior teacher for two years before I came. If he continues I'm sending him to the office. I'm not putting up with his junk. Another repeater moved into that class the other day and he started trying to be little Mr. Witty and said "A Tale of Two Titties" when I was talking about our study of Dickens this year and I just flat-out nipped that in the bud. I told the little man that he would not be saying that in here this year, it is disrespectful to me to do so (not to mention to Mr. Dickens), and that if he chose to continue that I would send him to our assistant principal (who the kids say can really light up your behind if you get my meaning). He said "How about if I don't say it?"...I just told him that would be fine (and thought to myself "not to mention wise"). I think that one is just on his second go round. Another is on his third. Luckily, they're all gathered into one class now. That is unless someone changes their schedule. Little Mr. Witty was quiet in his other room, but then he had to move in with the other one. He had best guard his book with his life, because someone spit tobacco in his last year - so he already owes me for one of them. Anyway, overall it has been a good week. I've already given a writing assignment and I really need to be grading them right now (I took a nap after school...it turned into six hours of sleep...I was wiped out), but I think I'll get up early in the morning and do them. The earlier I get up the more I can accomplish it seems sometimes. We did a little getting to know you activity today (due to me not getting everything scanned in for the lesson...I'm such a scatter-brain the first week). I made everyone tell me three things about themselves. I scored major points when I told them about my love of anime and the fact that I watch Family Guy and Robot Chicken. One of the kids is quite the artist - he draws a great InuYasha. I learned I have two girls who rodeo, one who has a brother in Iraq, several who are in bands or play instruments...one band is named Salad Fork profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=158444264(metal band and a student this year is the vocalist...one from last year is a guitarist), two others are in a band called Disposable Heroes www.myspace.com/disposableherosband and another one is a band manager...lots of musical aspirations in this bunch... Of course I told a couple of classes about the Lovehammers as well . There seems to be a large contingent of Metallica fans amongst this group. Thanks for asking, RJ. I'm happy to be able to give a good report. Many of my students like to read and they've already checked out their books for the first book report - AND IT'S ONLY THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL! That's amazing to me. Have a great week. Peace! EDITED TO SAY: If anyone should go to their sites, please do not tell them you found them through me. I'm trying to keep my personal real life and my online existence from intersecting as far as the kids are concerned. They know I chat online and they know I like Marty - so they may find this anyway...but help me keep my online identity separate from my real one as far as the kids are concerned, please.[/i] Peace.

Wow! Sounds like you know exactly what you want from your teaching experience. This will really benefit all of your students - even the stragglers and 'bad ones'. Things sink in through osmosis sometimes. Glad to hear your week went well.
Classes at Queen's U. start on Sept 10. Seems really late this year. I don't have courses until January, but I'm TAing for an interesting course. "Global Food Security, Agriculture, and the Environment". New prof. It's a 1/2 TA, so I don't have to run a tutorial. I'll be TAing the "Environmental Policy" course in January - full TA again. Last fall was my first experience teaching. Organizing and running a tutorial was just great! I think I would like to teach if I were offered the opportunity.
But first, I'll concentrate on finishing my masters. It's been an albatross for me. I started it back in 1994 at University of Waterloo. Wasn't able to complete it back then for personal reasons. I'm struggling again right now. Anyway, I feel stoked about September. Always do. There's nothing like a university campus in the fall. Ivy-covered limestone buildings from 200 years ago. Queen's is a lovely campus.
What is the school where you teach like? Is it small, large, in the city or the country?

I'm still here...was listening to some of the boys tracks. Turns out the vocalist for DH is the drummer for Salad Fork as well. I think Mars told me that, but I forgot.

OMG!!! That's awsome!!!!!
hee hee, I'm very giggly at the moment! I just realized that the first football game of the season is exactly one week away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That and I watched remember the titans and well...I got excited cause I started thinking about what would happen if we made it to state. We came very close last year, we were only a game or two away. It was sooooooo awsome! I think it was the game before cause in reality that should have been the state game cause it was number 1 against number 2. Basically whoever won that game, would win state. Maybe this year will be ours....I'm rambeling again.
