My theory is this...when they drafted him (they being the NY Jets)...everyone thought he would ultimately replace Curtis Martin as the lead running back. He's always been a bit plagued by injuries, but had a strong showing after Martin got hurt. Well, when Mangini took over (he started with Coach Herman Edwards), it seemed they kept bringing other RBs in and pushing Ced back on the depth chart. This year, they brought over Thomas Jones from the Chicago Bears...and he and another guy or two were above Ced on the depth chart when Curtis retired officially. I think he just realized he was not going to be utilized like he thought he was by the team and decided to quit. He's in Knoxville now. Somewhere I read something that said he was a homesick southern boy and was taking him to task for leaving when he did. The NY Times did a phone interview with his mom. She's not buying it either, but she said she told him as long as he wasn't doing drugs or anything he shouldn't be doing (and I don't think he would) she'll support him no matter what he decides. He and his mom are really close. After he scored his first pro game touchdown he asked the ref for the ball for his mama.

Sounds like a combo of homesickness and disappointment with his role there. Must be hard to be drafted and then have a couple of false starts due to injury or being sidestepped by another player. So competitive for these guys. |

Definitely, RJ. He was one of the main men in college that the team went to, and he decided to withdraw a verbal commitment to the Univ. of Ark. and go to the Univ. of Tennessee instead to play college ball...and I think that was for the same reason. It's just a theory. Yet, his little sister has a baby now and his mama is still in Clarendon...so he may have just wanted to be closer to them. However, I think it's a combination of the two things. Most 25 year olds would not be able to just walk away from that kind of money after three years though.
