I have also posted this over on the lovehammers.com message board under TOUR/Jacksonville, FL. I am posting it here as well so as to get this out to people who might not have previously considered helping with the street team effort. I am trying to reach as many people as possible.
This is my street teaming idea...
In Jacksonville, Florida, the same night the LHs are going to be at the Florida Theatre (venue seating - 1,900), there will be a heavily promoted rockfest ROCKSTARâ„¢ TASTE OF CHAOS 2006 www.tasteofchaos.com going on across the street and up the block from 6-11pm (Metro Park...for anyone familiar). MP is an outdoor venue which can accommodate up to 13,000. In talking to the promoter last week they had so far sold in excess of 6,000 tickets. I look at that in one way: 6,000+ potential new LH fans and who knows how many INXS converts over at the Florida Theatre. Parking downtown, for any event, is never an easy all-in-one-spot thing. There's just never enough space in any one place. There is ALLTEL stadium and the Arena complex across the street from MP, and there is also parking at The Landing (restaurant and shopping place on the river), and from those places people will usually hang out and then walk over to MP. All of these things are located on the river or the next street over. Florida Theatre is a street over from the river.
I think the key to promoting the band and getting the word out would work best in this way...create a buzz, bring people into 'your space' (they come because you've already gotten their attention)...which is much more effective than going into their space (minimal attention), connecting over the music...and I do mean THE MUSIC...what bands they came out to see...blah blah...what band you love (LHs obviously)...make the connection. The music...the LHs...sells itself.
How to do this? ROCK THE BLOCK! Basically...a 'Rock the Block' listening party (5-12pm)...moving from area to area...around the block. Deck out a stretch Hummer (or similar) in LH logos using vehicle magnets and/or window decals. I would also include something stating that it is a fan-based initiative (not a ST from the label and not something the band itself is doing). I haven't thought of a catchy phrase stating that which I could print...still thinking on that one. Fill it with promotional items...flyers...song samplers...stickers...post cards...guitar picks...all with LH web address, etc. I still have time to print everything except the picks...that takes about three weeks. That would have been a great thing to give out, but oh well. Last...and most important...I'd play all the LH tunes...everything from the current release to the back catalog that would catch people's attention the most. Hummers have a pretty good sound system. That's it...it's a pretty basic concept. Provide a way to connect over the music...then connect...you don't sell it...it sells itself. In fact, not a good thing to push or sell it to someone...right?? I mean, the LHs are right around the corner opening for INXS! They just had a major label release! What's really to sell? I say it that way...because people are naturally skeptical of something that is being pushed on them...but if they know you are digging it and lots of other people are digging it...they will usually dig it too.
Also note...I read many posts on here where longtime LH fans (and new fans) have said they don't like the way the label packaged the band. The new name...the first single, some of the new arrangements, etc. This is a way to fix that. Fans speak to fans better than anyone else!
So, this is the deal, would this work?? What do you think? What would you change or add? Would you be interested in contributing your time to this (that night)? Whether you have tickets or not? So far...I only know of one person that is going to this show and mentioned she could help, but that's all I have at this time. I personally don't have tickets and will be out of town that entire weekend FRI-SUN, however, I do have someone who I can appoint to look over this for me and be there in my place. I am willing and ready to fund this as well. I think it could go a long way...and be lots of fun! All I need is some Hammerhead Help! The clock is ticking so I need to know ASAP. Please, serious people only. No "maybe's"...only because I don't have time to separate the maybe's from everything else My e-mail address is listed under my profile or PM me, either way. Let's TURN UP THE LOVE in Jax on the 24th...the place where Florida begins...and the LHs are just getting started!!
