I think JD's constant talk about about staying with INXS forever was because he knew that's where he had an advantage over Marty.
Also, INXS already had most of the music recorded before they'd even chosen their lead singer. JD was a better fit for their pre-recorded music. Marty and his 'meet halfway' would have been better with working together on the music.
