I'm not exactly new (but this is the first post since signing up). I have been reading the message board for a while and noticed a question that was asked of Marty. She asked what the symbol by his eye was and what it meant. I found something that might help her figure it out and I'm not sure where to put it......

Well Marty did talk about his new album being the first one he is writing songs that aren't about the same girl all his other songs on all his other albums were ever about,(in the rock on request interview) so maybe that is his way of saying that is the end of that era and its on to new beginnings and newer, fresher stuff.

Good point, lhfan4life! The end of one age and the start of a new one. Perhaps we could also consider the clothing in "Sleeper" and what appears to be the start of "C'mon Baby" where the symbol appears - i.e. light clothes and him running into the future in contrast with the darkly clothed figure sitting still in the street with the symbol by his eye.

I've been thinking that what is going on is that these 2 videos will illustrate the 2 different sides of his personality. The Sleeper video, where he's dressed in white and singing a sweet song, illustrates his offstage persona, the laid-back Marty who will talk to you after a show, and make silly self-deprecating comments.

The bad-a** in the dark clothes with the X symbol by his eye is "Xavier", his onstage persona, which is a character he creates and unleashes when he's onstage, who seems to come from someplace deep within him.

I have actually seen him switch back and forth between characters just once, during the show at NIU, when I was in the front row with no barrier in front of the stage. "Xavier" was in full force right in front of me, and it was like staring into the face of a hurricane, a total force of nature. It was actually a little bit frightening. I looked up at him and thought, "You are amazing, but who the hell ARE you? You are not the guy I know offstage!" He read my look, looked into my eyes, and suddenly offstage Marty was looking back at me. In that instant, it was like telepathy--his look said, "I'm right here. I'm still in here, and have been all along. But I gotta go back to work now. 'Bye!"

And suddenly "Xavier" was back, unleashing the fury of the spirit of rock all over the stage again. I stood there a bit stunned afterward. I have never posted about that on the boards before.

So that's the concept I've had all along, and kind of what I figured that symbol was about.
