I hadn't heard the song, "I See Stars" until recently. What is the instrument I hear at the beginning and end of the song? It makes me think of India....?

It was some sort of indiam styled instrument that the producer had in the studio. We were working on the track and took a break. I asked what the instrument was and he showed me. It played only one vibrating phase of a note. But, the note worked in the song so we decided to throw it in there. And just like that we had an intro!
