Hammercrew Indiana promo work for the Music Mill show, April 11, 2008
As coordinator of Hammercrew Indiana, I want to give you a summary of what has been done by members of Hammercrew to promote this show. I felt like I shouldn’t ask anyone to do anything that I wasn’t willing to do myself, so I made the effort to do as much as I could in the time I’ve had. This really has been a team effort, though, so everyone who has done work will be credited here, to the extent that they’ve made me aware of what they have been doing.
Indiana University and Bloomington, Indiana—I traveled there on March 26 and 27 to hang flyers with my sister Marsha. We posted them on campus and in the surrounding downtown area on doors to buildings, on poles, on kiosks, on bulletin boards, at bars, restaurants, clubs, clothing stores, and libraries. We posted or distributed over 400 flyers there (both large and half-page size), over 2 days.
Indianapolis and Universities—I traveled there 2 times to hang flyers.
On the first trip April 2, I put them up at following campuses: IUPUI, University of Indianapolis, and Butler University, and put them on kiosks, on doors to buildings, on bulletin boards, at bars, restaurants, clubs, clothing stores, and libraries. I also left some flyers at the Ronald McDonald House that serves the Riley Hospital for Children at the IUPUI campus’ med school. I told them about the band having raised money at their previous show for Musicians On Call, and explained what that was. I told them that since it’s an 18+ show, the kids at the hospital couldn’t go, but perhaps the staff would like to check it out and show support for this band for what they did. That got a good reaction from the front desk staff. I distributed over 400 flyers on that trip, and also gave some flyers to a member of Rok Hollywood, one of the opening bands for the Music Mill show. They’ve been putting up flyers and sending out MySpace bulletins and comments, too.
On the second trip, Saturday April 5, I had a work crew to help with flyers in Broad Ripple (which is Indy’s version of Wicker Park). Duane (HammeredHam) and Den (Denise/dlh on the boards) helped post flyers on posts all around the area, and we also left some with clothing stores, restaurants, and an independent record store. It was a beautiful afternoon, and Broad Ripple was packed with people. Lots of the Saturday night crowd got to see those flyers. We also street-teamed some Obama street-teamers who were there. Before leaving Indy that evening, Duane and I took stacks of flyers to the Guitar Center and Sam Ash Music stores. We distributed over 350 flyers on that trip.
Purdue and West Lafayette—I have been covering this area on an ongoing basis for the past few weeks. I have posted flyers around the Village area, the restaurant, bar, and shopping area next to campus. I have hung flyers on poles, bulletin boards, and kiosks around campus, and in all the stairwells of all the parking garages—a popular place for flyers. I will continue posting flyers until the day before the show. By that time, I will have distributed at least 500 flyers.
Chicago—The Hard Rock Café let me hand out flyers in the club during the show on March 29 with LH and Mink. Lots of people took flyers, and they also let me leave stacks of them out on the bar and counters. I pitched it to the Chicago fans as making a nice road trip. While I was handing out flyers there, a guy came up to me and asked if I was in a Hammercrew. I told him I was, and he introduced himself as Danny, and said he has been following the band for years. He said he really appreciates what the Hammercrews do. I asked him if he could please spread the word among the band's friends that if they can make it to that show at all, please do so. It would really help the band to have the extra ticket sales. He said he would.
Print and online publications--I have sent requests to include the show in the following publications’ print and online activity calendars, as well as suggested news stories by telling about Hammerheads traveling from all over the world to shows, and gave links to my Photobucket with permission to use my photos in their stories:
Lafayette Journal and Courier
Indianapolis Star
Purdue Exponent
University of Indianapolis Reflector
Butler University Collegian
Indiana University Indiana Daily Student
Ball State University Daily News
Culture Week (Bloomington, Indiana)
The Booze News (Bloomington, Indiana—targets Greek houses)
The “crew” part of Hammercrew--I assigned tasks to other helpers who have been real troopers about getting work done, as follows:
Radio stations and other media--Janet, the coordinator of Hammercrew Florida, stepped up to the plate to take on contacting radio stations, especially in Indianapolis, and contacted newspapers and community calendars, too. She got Marty an interview on Rock On Request magazine online. She has been trying to get the band or Marty interviews on the Indy radio stations. The 2 biggest rock stations, X103 and Q95, are owned by Clear Channel, and can’t do interviews, unfortunately.
MySpace--Gail and Glory in Canada, who organized the Hammercrew sites and the LH Teen Club, have been a huge help with sending comments to friends on the Indiana and Kentucky Hammercrew sites, along with everything else they do to help make the Hammercrew sites work. Between their efforts and Janet’s, that freed up a lot of time for me to handle the ground operations here in Indiana. I have sent some bulletins and comments, too, as I have time.
NW Indiana, NE Indiana, and Indy area--I asked Alecia (jadepary) and Amy (OldSkoolAmy) to hang flyers in NW Indiana, including campuses up there. I asked Johnna, a member of Hammercrew Indiana who wanted to help, to hang flyers in her town, Fort Wayne. She is covering IUPU Fort Wayne, as well as Piere’s and other bars, along with her friend Amanda. She handed out flyers at the Collective Soul concert at Piere’s, and she has posted the flyer on her city/county notice board at work that reaches over 3000 employees and has posted it every week. Paula has been covering Greenfield, and Den has also been Hammering her co-workers.
Nick (friend of the band) has been a real street-teaming machine! He’s been selling tickets, putting flyers on cars, and handing out flyers at other shows. He took that initiative on his own—that’s a wonderful friend!
One thing that may work against ticket sales is that IU’s Little 500 bicycle race/party weekend is the same weekend, so probably a lot of people in Bloomington and Indianapolis who might have come to the show will be down at IU partying. We will just have to do the best we can with what we have, though.
Have a great show, Lovehammers!
