I have been really enjoying watching the Trees video from CBGB's along with the videos from Joe's over at the LH fan club site. One of the things I love about them is they recapture how it feels to see the band live (which is becoming even more precious to me as the days slip by and I am getting concerned that the 2/12 show won't be rescheduled).
I just got the U2 Communication CD, which has some videos of them performing live, and they are very frustrating to watch, not because the production isn't beautiful (it is) and the band doesn't sound great (of course, they do). It's because the cuts are so fast and so disjointed that you don't really get what it feels like to be there. And really, do we need to see closeups of The Edge's fingers on his guitar strings? It's not like I'm trying to learn how to play. What's next ... shots of Bono's vocal cords?
Okay, enough snark. My point is that when LH start getting filmed live by a professional, with great production values (and I am convinced that will start happening really soon) I hope they retain the quality of these amateur videos and don't cut themselves to shreds. It's totally selfish, of course ... I want to be able to recreate the power of their performances in my living room, every day!

hey Wendy! ya know the weird thing is that I was actually in Chicago for the U2 shows that are on the DVD and because the director chose to not show any fans and kept everything so clean. I too feel like I am watching a show that I had no experience in. or something--hard to explain. On the other hand, when the Joe's videos came up, I relished them. I was there, too, and every second felt like "ooooh I remember that!" Part of it, however, may be that the venue is smaller and you're really in touch with the band, so to speak. I keep thinking some documentary filmmaker is going to start accumulating all this "underground' LH footage to make one kick ass film about the band. One can but live in hope!
