I would love to go to this (and I'm sure sis would as well), but I'm already going to see Trans-Siberian Orchestra in KC that night. Poop.
I hate being so far from Chicago!!!! Even when I'm close (like when I'm in KC), I usually have other plans already.

It was another night of great music and good times with Marty and the fans who were there! Marty played for over an hour and a half. He seemed to be in a fun and goofy mood, even ribbing the crowd for getting so into the "Yeehaw" part at the end of "The Riddle"--he said we went totally into Hoedown mode at the drop of a hat, and demonstrated by doing a little barn dance movement of his own! ;D Very funny stuff! There was a good turnout, with about 1/4 the crowd being familiar faces, and the rest were new fans. I was talking to a guy from Minnesota before the show. He said that he and his girlfriend and their friend had driven 5 hours to come see Marty for their first time ever, and they were so excited! I told him that they were going to be amazed and blown away. He couldn't believe that he was getting to see him in a small club, because he thought Marty should be playing to packed stadiums. I said, "I think that's a very real possibility in the future, so enjoy this kind of show while we still have it." I told him to stick around after the show, because Marty loves to meet the fans and talk afterward. I think he didn't really believe me, but little did he know that he was about to have the night of his life! I told him that his enthusiasm was wonderful, and asked him to come to this board and post his review. I hope he does. He wasn't the only one to have the night of his life, though. Marty had a new roadie that night--Duane! (aka Hammeredham) Duane did a really good job. He tuned Marty's guitars, set things up on stage, and helped as needed during the show, even racing to rescue Marty's second guitar on its stand just before it fell victim to a collision with one of the fans who came up on stage to dance to "Trees". Fan and guitar were both saved from harm by Duane's quick action. Good job, dude!!! And hats off to Marty for his trust and generous spirit. Several members of Marty's family were there, and he gave a shout-out to his dad during "Can't Always Get What You Want". Marty told us a story about knocking himself out in this club once. He said that Lovehammers played there about 7 or 8 years ago. It was a big show for them, and he was psyched to kick it off in a big way. They were starting with “Faded Grey”, and when the main part of the song kicked in, he leaped high into the air. He said he cracked his head on the beam over the stage, “that one right up there” and pointed up to it. I noticed it did have a dent there! He said he knocked himself out and fell to the stage unconscious. Then the next thing he knew, Dino was poking him with the toe of his shoe, saying, “Marty, get up. Just get up, Marty. You gotta get up.” He said that’s one of many times he’s knocked himself out, including in baseball. Yikes! Here's the setlist—I picked it up off the stage after the show. It's another menu-type list, and Marty chose songs from the different categories on it. I'll try to remember which songs he played. I know he started with "Mr. Brightside", and ended with "Trees". The rest are not in order: Skinny White Guitar Player Just Go The Riddle Hold On Lithium Creep Wish You Were Here Hit Me Baby Never Tear Us Apart Can't Always Get... Driving Blind Sleeper Clouds Be The One (He said he wrote this song about 5 years ago, and it was recorded in the same session as Clinic and the original LH version of Trees. It was never released then, but now it's going to be on the new LH CD.) I'm not sure what that song in the lower right of the setlist is. It looks like it says "Watchin' life cruisin' down the road". When Marty called for people to come up on stage to dance during "Trees", lots of girls came up, so then he called for some guys to come up. The guy from Minnesota and his girlfriend came up on stage. Marty was talking to this guy, and he was hilarious! He had that dry Minnesota wit and accent, and their exchanges had the crowd laughing out loud. I can't remember all of it, but at one point, the guy introduced his girlfriend, and said, "This is the love of my life, but I think she likes you better than me!" ;D After the show, Marty hung out with everyone for probably around 2 hours. It was a fun and relaxed atmosphere, with everyone enjoying each others' company. Many stories were told, many toasts were made, and lots of laughter and dancing ensued! (I had no idea I was going to be boogying down with the dude from Minnesota at one point! Ha ha--let's just say I don't enter dance contests, for good reason! ) Oh, another funny part of the show was that there were 2 different concert rooms at this venue, and while Marty was playing, there was a heavy metal show going on downstairs. So we got a vibrating floor and 'interesting' bass sound effects at odd moments during the show! Someone mentioned snow for this show? It was just beginning to snow when we left the venue at the end of the evening. By morning there was some accumulation, with more during the day. We drove downtown to do some sightseeing and take in the Christmas lights on Michigan Avenue as dusk fell, then it was time to hit the road. It turns out that there was freezing precip falling en route, so the snow plows were driving on both lanes, speading salt and driving slowly on purpose to slow down traffic. It took us nearly 6 hours to get home from downtown Chicago, when it usually only takes 2.5 to 3 hours. Yep, it's winter in the midwest!

Marty told the story of knocking himself out in St. Louis. He seems like a caged animal on those small stages.

Nancy great review! There were so many little things that happened at various moments during the show that were so much fun. He seemed to make a lot of eye contact and recognized different people in the crowd, talking to them as he went about the set. One thing left out is that he also played the first verse of Clinic as someone called it out from the crowd. He didn't think he remembered it, but he tried and the crowd just kinda pushed him to continue by singing along. I have to give a shout out to the opening band, So Long Charlie, too. They were really good, and they stuck around after their set. I think they were very excited to meet Marty, not to mention share the stage with him. They interacted with the fans after the show, too. The guy from Minnesota was a blast! Just so many little things happened throughout the night; there's just no way to account for them all. Plus, some of the things that really stood out to me are other people's stories and I'd rather they have a chance to tell them. One of the best parts for me (and kinda awkward moments) was when Marty was singing Driving Blind. There's that part in the middle, "Doo doo, doo doo doo doooooooo . . ." Well, Marty and I made eye contact during that song and right at that part, I'm singing along and we both kinda lifted our eyebrows at the same time. For some reason, it made us both laugh. For a couple of minutes we were both trying hard not to laugh, but the other one was making it worse. I don't know why we didn't just stop looking at each other, but we didn't. That moment just really sticks out in my mind. And it really describes the tone of the night for me and the group I was with. We laughed and had fun all night. I don't think I've laughed that much in a long time! I have some pictures I just finished editting. I'll put those up as soon as they're loaded to photobucket.

Nancy, thanks for that fun review and set list, sounds like a great time, as usual I really wish I could have been there! Also sounds like there was a decent crowd which is cool and fun stories about the Minnesota couple. I also have to extend a thanks to you. My B-I-L attended this show, after hearing me talk about Marty for 3 years, this show just happened to be in his backyard sort to speak, so he decided he would check it out. It seems that during the evening you helped him out, by taking a pic of the set list and another of him and Marty after the show with his camera. Ironically, he called me just before going into the bar about 9:45 and asked if there was anyone I knew for sure was going to be there, unfortunately, I missed the call. I called him back as soon as I got the message and told him to look for you and Duane. I gave him a brief description of you guys so he could chat and get an idea of how the night might go, but he missed my call... The next day he called to let me know how the show was and said after hearing my message he had to laugh because he stood shoulder to shoulder with you through the show, and how you took the pics for him, not ever knowing that I had called him telling him to look for you guys. Duane, another very cool night for you, congrats on the gig! Very cool that Marty asked you to help him out, he knew you would get the job done. Rachel, thanks for your review also, I love shows that you can walk away with those special moments, that makes it such a great experience. And thanks for sharing your pics, they came out great! I even noticed that Marty was wearing the stars bracelet... Thanks again for sharing with all of us who couldn't be there, it always makes it a bit easier.
