I just listened to this interview, and I LOVED it. It showcased what I love about Marty: his intelligence. He is so articulate and positive. Just when I thought I couldn't be more impressed with him....

I very much enjoyed this interview too. I loved that Marty came prepared, armed with his own list of bands with replacement lead singers. I have thought about this a while and wonder who all was on his list. Let's try to put together a list. We can list the ones mentioned on the radio show and then lets try to add more.
The Doors with Ian Astbury Queen with Paul Rodgers INXS AC/DC Van Halen Genesis Pink Floyd Jefferson Starship Fleetwood Mac (I think they went through several lead singers throughout the decades....especially early on)
Who can add more to this list?

remember that 80's "super" group Powerstation? It had members of Duran Duran and Robert Palmer was the singer on the album, but on tour Sammy Hagar took over. it was weird.

Rage Against The Machine brought in Chris Cornell as the lead singer after Zack de la Rocha left. After a couple of years they changed their name and became Audioslave.

Journey? Steve Perry was (or still is) replaced, right?

Fleetwood Mac (I think they went through several lead singers throughout the decades....especially early on) Yep, definitely. I can't think of another band who has gone through more vocalists than Fleetwood Mac. They started out as a blues band in England with mostly Peter Green on vocals, though Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer also occasionally sang lead. Then they sort of lost their blues guys and morphed into kind of a jazz/rock band with Bob Welch and Christine McVie joining and taking on most of the vocals. But even between Green and Welch/McVie there was another vocalist for a short time. Forget his name. Then Welch left and they morphed again into a pop/rock band with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joining McVie on vocals. That was their most successful era from the mid-70s through the late 80s. Then McVie, Buckingham and Nicks all eventually left and they morphed again into a fairly generic rock band with Rick Vito, Billy Burnette and Bekka Bramlett on vocals in the early 90s. McVie, Buckingham and Nicks came back in the late 90s. Then McVie left again in 2003. I think right now the singers are officially just Buckingham and Nicks. Seriously, A LOT of vocalists and changes in Fleetwood Mac through the years!

Thanks for explaining that Lesley.... I remembered they did switch members around a lot.
Also I seem to remember that Paul Revere and the Raiders had to find someone to replace Mark Lindsey when he left for a solo career. That was quite a few years back (am I showing my age??) But I think I read somewhere that some incarnation of Paul Revere and the Raiders still plays gigs.
Just remembered another one... Iron Butterfly. They had a vocalists and two other members leave and are still out gigging some.

I loved the interview as well! I too, was impressed with how prepared Marty was and I thought the last comment about the Lovehammers having a show later on to replace Marty was hilarious. Yeah right! LOL Dino: "I'm sorry, you're just not right for our band, The Lovehammers"

Thinking about this made me realize how hard it is to successfully replace a lead singer.
Anyway, the interview was very revealing. Marty was obviously talking about something he really loves (making music) and he was also much more forthcoming about the group dynamics during the show.

I never cease to be amazed at how insightful Marty's interviews are. He's truly a disciple of his craft, I love listening to him - the consummate articulate frontman with a vision who can just rock your world onstage. Cindy: That laundry list of bands that have lost/replaced their lead singers makes one realize the longevity of the bands that still record and tour (such as Bon Jovi, The Stones) and how much that affects their endurance. The stability of their lead singers might have a direct bearing. Interesting thread... Also curious as to how many on this board know who Paul Revere and the Raiders are? Guess we're some of the "more seasoned" rockers on this awesome board ...!

My first concert was Deep Purple.

Loved Paul Revere and the Raiders, they always looked like they were having so much fun, which always made their music fun. And Mark Lindsay was quite cute as I remember him. Yes that Marty has quite an interesting array of fans. Sharon

. . . But I think I read somewhere that some incarnation of Paul Revere and the Raiders still plays gigs. They were playing at Disney World when we were there a few years ago. I, too, remember them from the '60s.

Just thought of Styx too. They've gone on with a Dennis DeYoung soundalike vocalist after dropping Dennis, just like Journey replaced Steve Perry with a soundalike.
I always laugh when I think of Styx because of VH1's "Behind the Music" episode on them. At one point in the show, the members complain about how the critics despised Styx during their heydey. They quote one critic as having described one of their albums as like "a parking lot full of whale vomit". Mean, yes, but .funny to me. Very descriptive. LOL.
