As the judge, right? He should be very good in that role, provided he is a singer. He has the build/look for that role...that's for sure. Anthony Head's involved too!?!?!?!?!?!? *Smacks the Buffy fanatic within back into darkness* Holy smokes! He's also playing Duncan in an updated version of Macbeth! I hope that sees the light of day. Yes. Having seen Alan in similar roles, should be awesome. Yes. He's quite the singer too. He's got a rather interesting voice.

I can very easily see he who is known as Snape as the Judge. I'm a bit concerned about Helena as Mrs. Lovett. I do so love Angela Lansbury & Patti Lupone's takes on that character. I imagine she and Johnny will play very well off one another - they always do.
I have some of Anthony Head's solo stuff somewhere on my computer. He was also a very interesting Frank-N-Furter in a live production of Rocky Horror. Those photos scare me a bit.

In an interview about "Sweeney", Johnny mentioned a possible project where he will play Barnabas Collins! Remember the old "Dark Shadows"?! He said he is hoping that project comes to fruition. Yay! Johnny as a vampire!!!

OOOH, Johnny as Barnabas! Interesting! PET PEEVE: I'm going to gripe about this now. I'm starting to see the previews and bits on TV, but I've yet to see or hear ANYONE sing. Sweeney Todd is a musical. I hear the instrumental theme in the background, but where are the tunes!?!?!?!

It's not enough! I hadn't seen that, but I want more. I know Johnny CAN sing...provided they made the music work for him...he's not the one I'm worried about. I'm worried about HBC. Mrs. Lovett has some beautiful songs. I'll just about cry if she doesn't do them justice. Plus I don't know who is playing Tobias. Shame he didn't pull some from the staging of it as a concert...Neil Patrick Harris (yes, Doogie/Barney of all people) played Toby and did an excellent job.

Hiya SG - I've not been around this thread for a while. Looking forward to seeing Sweeney Todd, but guessing it'll be when it comes out on DVD for me, getting to & from a cinema from where I live on public transport is a nightmare.
Fingers crossed it'll be a good one - with Tim Burton how can it fail?

Wow I am wondering about the Sweeny Todd movie and If I'll wait till it comes out on video and then I see Depp is playing Dillinger? Dang he is one busy dude! He is very versatile for sure. And tonight I saw a clip of him saying he never sang before . Good for him.

Did you girls catch the VH1 special on the movie??? IT LOOKS AND SOUNDS (MORE IMPORTANTLY) FANTASTIC! Several of my students said they're going to try to go see it over break. I love that. I'm sure it's due to Johnny, but if they get a little culture at the same time...there's no harm in that. Stephen Sondheim (the composer/lyricist) had praise for all the cast...he said something to the effect he prefers an actor who can act a song to a trained voice that can't any day. I also found it interesting that Tim Burton said he put Helena through a complete and rigorous audition process for Mrs. Lovett. I believe the quote was, "I didn't want people just saying I gave it to my girlfriend."... He wanted to be sure she could do it vocally and all. So she drafted a voice coach to teach her how to sing it in three months. Sascha Baron Cohen looks pretty impressive as Perelli!
In another interesting footnote, they just welcomed their second child last Saturday - a girl who was conceived while Todd was being filmed. I read a quote from Helena where she said it made for some interesting continuity problems...being that she's not really busty and the film was shot out of sequence. Her comment was something to the effect I may be at the bottom of the stairs with grapefruits and when I get to the top of them I have tangerines again.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I read a review that said it is very violent and gorey and that even though it is brilliant it could be Freddie kruger set to music! Yikes,I am a big scardy cat so I will be waiting for the DVD that I can watch at home with the lights on...lol

I saw ST Friday morning... Now that was WILD ride of a movie! Johnny Depp's singing in this movie will blow your socks off...I had heared a few clips of his singing in a few places on the web..but to see the full movie..WOW!! It's a mindblowing movie forsure. I'm still stunned..but in good way. Yep...it was intense in some places...but given the story and the motivation of Johnny Depp's STodd...it made sense what we did see. But there are a few surprises. I...along with many fans who weren't big horror/bloody fans or musical fans..ended up handling it all GREAT...there are forsure 'glance away from the screen' moments...but I tried to focus on Johnny Depp character..the music and the basic story of why ST was the way he was. So I hope for those not sure about seeing it..give it go and see it. If needed..take a friend(that will make the scary parts not so bad) SG

Jilly, in the special they said they used 50 to 60 gallons of fake blood during the production. What cracked me up was they showed footage of them making it up in big buckets (probably five gallon ones) and mixing it with a tool like you use to mix mastic or cement...
I'm worried about the gore component too, but as they said...it doesn't make sense to tell a story about a man who slits people's throats to get revenge without having lots of blood.
I'm going to try to catch it before the week is out. Maybe Thursday. Tomorrow will be too tightly booked, I think. I've been sick this weekend...so it's going to have to be later this week for me...at the earliest.
