P.S. I'm not trying to spoil anything, but from the top of the stage show you know the officers of the law have been involved because the play opens with them throwing a body into a grave followed by a woman scattering black ashes into the grave with the body (these are the stage directions from the original production)...that leads into "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" number that roughly sets up the story without giving it all away...

Jilly, that's okay. It doesn't sound quite the same. That sounds a bit more like the original story...when Sweeney killed to steal instead of as a way to avenge what happened to his family.

Yeah there was no mention of his family whatsoever. Only that he was guardian of Alice and he and Mrs Lovett had a business together to profit from the materialism and the hint that cannibalism is addicting and he just can't stop and he had a relationship with Mr Lovett. it was not a musical though just a 2 hour movie probably made for TV??

If you like Ben Kingsley you will like it. He is so amazing ! Campbell Scott he was okay, I didn't realize he is the son of George C Scott and Colleen Dewhurst. Wow I found it out as I looked it up on IMDB

Yep, he's got a first-rate pedigree as far as actors go! I knew that from back when he was in "Dying Young"...seems I remember hearing somit about it then. I think his mom had a role in that movie as well, but I can't remember for sure right now.
I adore Ben Kingsley. He plays Feste (aka The Clown) in the version of Twelfth Night that I have used in class...in a six degrees of separation game we could connect him to Helena Bonham Carter (Mrs. Lovett in the new ST movie) through that film...she plays Olivia. I'm thinking about changing versions this year. I'll just have to wait and see. Every year when I show the version with Kingsley the kids want to argue with me that he is Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard from Star Trek)...I keep telling them they're wrong that this guy played Gandhi, but they won't listen. He was also in a version of Othello that I would like to see. They turned the whole thing on its ear...instead of Othello being black and everyone else being white they flipped it...he was Othello.
Peace.

I have the playscript. I haven't seen it staged unfortunately except for a concert version featuring Patti Lupone as Mrs. Lovett and George Hearn as Sweeney...and Doogie Howser as Toby *giggles*...It was excellent, but it was pretty much the actors and an orchestra...bare minimum props, etc. That's part of the reason I want to see the tape of Lansbury as Lovett so badly.
I did figure out whether or not Sweeney predates A Tale of Two Cities. It does; by 29 years or so. So Dickens definitely knew of the tales about Todd...and I'm thinking the choice to make Jerry Cruncher a resident of a street off of Fleet Street may have been a deliberate one...since he's a messenger by day and a grave robber by night.

I finally got to see this on Sunday Loved it. I was surprised that Art liked it, but he did & even wanted pie for tea! I can understand why critics here are talking about Depp channeling David Bowie! Fantastic all round.

He's up for the Oscar. He's long overdue, but the buzz for Daniel Day-Lewis in "There Will Be Blood" is deafening. George Clooney is also in that race for "Michael Clayton". It should be an interesting one. I'd love to see Johnny finally win one.
