LA Guns launched into the set with Over the Edge. Right off the bat they sounded tight, confident and relevant. This was not going to be some recreation of an 80's glam band long past its prime. Whether you know and love these songs doesn't really matter, this show was about raw energy and rock and roll and the more power these five guys threw at it the smoother it ran. Un-freaking-believable.
Marty's energy level was off the charts...with a performance that was strong, sexy and focused...a clear announcement that if you think you've seen the best of Marty Casey, well you ain't seen nothing yet. Yes there were familiar references to Marty's past performances, but pared down in a way that was elemental and less frenetic. His vocals sound stronger than ever, with great backing vocals from Alec, Chad and Jeremy. And the synergy between Marty and Tracii throughout the show is electrifying. There is a constant give and take between the two frontmen and Marty's pared down performance is complemented by Tracii's inspired guitar work, which is engaging without overpowering the songs or the rest of the band.
Each of the band members was given an opportunity to shine. When Marty stepped off the stage and the band launched into a blistering version of Brides of Destruction's Shut the F**k Up, Jeremy proved that Marty isn't the only member of LA Guns with the vocals and stage presence to front a band. And this is one fan who would love to hear a full-on electric version of Wish You Were Here. When Marty and Tracii sat down and performed an acoustic version of the song, I missed the energy of the full band.
Other highlights included Fire It Up, a song from the band's upcoming release, You Can't Always Get What You Want, Marty's vocals were simply inspired on this one, Never Enough, with Tracii's solo intro from ACDC's Hells Bells, This Town and closer Rip and Tear.
LA Guns definitely proved with this show that they are reinventing the past and roaring into the future. I'm looking forward to what they bring next.
